Shmups similar to Espgaluda....
that are emulated. I'm not asking where to find these, just one's similar to this shmup. While I'd like to get it for my PS2, it isn't cheap:

and I really want to know whether or not it's a shmup that I would play a lot.
Maybe I need to get my butt out to a shmup meet, because I'm also curious about games similar to Radirgy. I do love shmups where there's leeching/milking, or whatever you call it.

fair enough, maybe we have different ideas on what cheap means.dave4shmups wrote:Not for that amount of money before I've either played it, or something similar, hence my questions.jpj wrote:just buy it goddamn you
it's a pretty distinctive game though. can't you just watch some youtube videos and make a decision?

I gave Progear a try a while back, and enjoyed it. What about ESP RA.DE? Is that pretty similar?ForceDevice wrote:Similar to Galuda, emulated: Progear
If Galuda is a game you'll be playing a lot: you bet it is
Shmups similar to Radirgy: Karous
Shmups with lots of milking/leeching: too many to fit this post

Lol, come live in the UK. New PS3 and X360 games are up to $100 each. Honest. If you want my opinion, ESPGaluda is worth up to $100, and it has a vaguely similar bullet eating mechanic to Progear and ESP Ra.De (in that the better you get at the scoring system, the more bullets you can clear from the screen).

ESP Ra. De. Has totally, TOTALLY different gameplay mechanics, except for the bomb. But Galuda's system is way better IMO. Also, it has those Engrish texts between stages and a two-part Stage 5 with lots of annoying shooting girls at part 5.2. The similarities probably end there.

Yeah, I emulated it today, and it is totally different, in terms of gameplay.ForceDevice wrote:dave4shmups wrote:I gave Progear a try a while back, and enjoyed it. What about ESP RA.DE? Is that pretty similar?ForceDevice wrote:Similar to Galuda, emulated: Progear

So, what about shmups similar to Radirgy that you can play on MAME? Are there any?

I don't think anyone has ever bought Galuda and thought "what a pile of shit" - and like sven says, the cave shooters hold a decent value and you could sell it for damn close to what you paid.
Incedently, for further persuasion to buy it, Ord has a good review at his site here:

What other shmups are you into Dave? We may be able to gauge how much you'd like it?dave4shmups wrote: I really want to know whether or not it's a shmup that I would play a lot.

Aside from traditional shmups, I do love bullet-manic shmups where there's leeching/milking-I even enjoyed it in Chaos Field. That's why I'm not real into DonPachi, DDP, or DDPDOJ.Caveman wrote:What other shmups are you into Dave? ESP Galuda is a fun game. I'd recommend it. If you like Progear, Ra.de., or basically most other Cave games, i'd say you'd enjoy it. They're not worlds apart.

espgaluda is a pretty unique and truly innovative game. the kakusei-system is still a really refreshing and new idea in stg-land. cave expanded on the original idea and enhanced it in espgaluda II, which is really the only game that comes close to espgaluda. yet what evil_ash_xero and others say, if you enjoy other cave games espgaluda will also appeal to you.
anyway you can pick it up at play-asia for $64.90 (and with a $5 discount coupon which you can probably find in trading section) you go down to a totally fair price.
arika ports may appear pricey, yes but at least you get serious quality and a superplay/appreciate dvd with the package. truly worth its value.

No, I have an NTSC-US PS2. And be careful about what you mention on here, I don't want this thread to get locked.antron wrote:do you have a NTSC-J PS2? if you are you using a swap/hack just download and try it. if you like it buy it. if not then toss it.
I'd love to get a J-PS2; the main reason I have a US PS2 is because I'm such an RPG nut.

You really don't need to put down $200 for a J-PS2. Google for something called Swap Magic. It'll let you play both import and downloaded/burned PS2 games.dave4shmups wrote:No, I have an NTSC-US PS2. I'd love to get a J-PS2; the main reason I have a US PS2 is because I'm such an RPG nut.Still, the newest slim J-PS2's are less then $200.00, so as soon as I get a job with more then like 8 hours/week (which is all GameStop is giving me) I will probably pick one up.

I'd want be able to play J-PS1 games as well, so I might as well go for the J-PS2. In any case, Swap Magic is taboo on this site.kengou wrote:You really don't need to put down $200 for a J-PS2.
