Favorite Wuxia films

Post by it290 »

Just fishing for recommendations. I've had a hankering for some classic kung fu action lately, and although I've seen a ton of these movies, I'm sure there are dozens of obscure classics I'm still missing. Also would be interested in any recommendations from the Japanese erotic action exploitation genre.

I'd reccomend the following Hwang Jang Lee films;

36 Deadly Styles
Buddha Assasinator
Dragons Claws
Snuff Bottle Connection

The guy is one of my favourite kung-fu villains, but alot of his films outside of the two he did with Jackie Chan (Snake in the Eagles Shadow, Drunken Master) are mostly ignored. Snuff Bottle Connection is awesome if you can find it - I managed to pick it up on VCD, but never have found it on DVD. Also, Dragon Claws is a great average kung-fu movie, Hwang's great as usual but my personal highlight is the villain 'Abbacus Man' who, as you might have guessed, fights with an abbacus :lol:

Other random kung-fu reccomendations;

Crippled Avengers
Prodigal Son (Yuen Biao's best film)
Hand of Death (Dorian Tan, Sammo Hung & a young Jackie Chan - well worth tracking down)
Five Deadly Venoms (Shaw Bros classic)
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (Awesome, just pure awesome)
Drunken Monkey
Snake in the Monkey's Shadow (Awesome film with actors i've never heard of, but it's really good)

The early 1970's Japanese film of "The Professional" starring Sonny Chiba is plain crazy kung-fu action, sprinkled with some low brow humor & mixed up with some nice titty shots...can't go wrong with that combination. ^_~

Do you know Lam Ching Ying? Occult martial arts at its best. I'd recommend Magic Cop, also known as Mr Vampire 5, starring him.

Oneechanbara: The Movie

I saw the trailer. It's hilarious.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Fong Sai Yuk - crazy comedy with Jet Li. The sequel isn't as good.

...I watch enough of these movies, but nothing else comes to mind right now.

Yeah, both 36th Chamber and Return to the 36th chamber are awesome (Disciples of the 36th Chamber, eh...not so much) but personally Eight Diagram Pole Fighter is my favourite Gorden Liu film.

Sweet. Probably should have mentioned that stuff like Master of the Flying Guillotine and the Venoms films are some of my favorites. Some great recommendations so far.
Drunken Master
Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain
Hero
Azumi
Not nearly obscure enough. ;) .. (ok, I haven't seen Zu Warriors)

Also not obscure enough.. Sonny Chiba is indeed the man although at the moment I'm looking more for titles like Sex and Fury, Female Yakuza Tale, Terrifying Girls' High School, and so forth. Actually I've seen all the films in the recently-released Pinky Violence collection, so anything outside of those (and not Sonny Chiba-- I've seen nearly ALL of his films, and he's made a lot) would be awesome.

Clueless question: Does "Wuxia film" refer to HK martial arts films set in the past, right? As opposed to modern settings?

Yeah, it's sort of the swashbuckler/knights in shining armor genre of China. Although I'm really interested in anything, most of the films with the 'best' fight choreography (I like movies with really long takes in the fight scenes) tend to fall into this genre.

Wow, I was expecting that movie to be set in a surf town from the name of it. Sounds really cool, just read a review of it.
