try Anaru Dansyaku: Galaxy Hero by Artesneit. I played it a lot and still cant beat what looks like the first boss (about 1 min into the game) and the game doesnt let you continue. Its brutal and great fun

Plus, Its free.

Some contenders off the top of my head:

Truxton II
R-Type
Daisenpu

But the all-time champion is probably

Stargate

Defender II Stargate is hard to get the hang of at first, but my friend KAC counter stopped it when it came out in the arcades, so its not as bad as you might think.
I've also met a guy in my local arcade who could do 5 hours on 1 credit of the original Defender.

I'll second that - but it does get easier after you've died for the millionth time and then you find a pixel perfect route through.

I don't agree about R-Type tho -I found that to be quite easy to get into.

First few levels are a doddle

The first stage of Ibara is hard no matter what skill level you are at, very hard to get consistency on it also.

Hell I'd even throw the JP version of Gradius 3 in there. I mean of course there is the standard couple of lines of popcorn enemies, but after that it gets pretty fricken hard
People I have dealt with successfully: bleem (x2), spazicon, sven666, sparky, iatneH, Dragon1952, kozo, Ghegs

I don't think you really appreciate what they did. That's incredible, it really takes a crazy amount of practice to get that good.

Truxton II
Recently I played a credit of this one. About 45 minutes later I had finished the first level, and my gums were bleeding.

Well I do appreciate those feats to be honest. They are indeed very fiddly games to pick up in the first place. I remember being confounded by the multi-button controls on Defender (but I was only 12). KAC is a couple of years older, so he managed it.

If you insist on playing Stage 1 pure bomb style, then yes it does require a lot of restarts. If you mix n'match firing and bombing, then Stage 1 is no problem. Depends how greedy you are.

Gradius III arcade had a beast of a first level. Those sand lions are merciless.

I remember trying to play Legion on PC-Engine CD-Rom... I felt like a snail diving in the dead sea.

Yeah, Legion and Deep Blue take quite some time to adjust to their slow speeds.

Seriously? "real feet" of your TV, or in-game feet? I stopped watching the Genesis ver. youtube vid because it was another ugly-looking hori, and I'd rather not think about games like Anthro Dunce except worse.

DEL: Jesus, is there anything your friend didn't counter-stop back in the day? If Donkey Kong didn't have the kill screen he would've counter-stopped that too.

Agreed, Stargate and Defender can be just a tad loopy, that's for sure.

Usually I get to around the 5th or 6th wave, and then I crash into something stupid, or all the humanoids die and Im chased by 39739657 Mutants for about 5 seconds and then I explode.

For me though,

Mushihime Ultra.

CURSE that first stage. Just...... BAH.

The fact that you have very little firepower in that level, since it's the first, is what always gets me. It took me *awhile* before I was able to beat this stupid level without having to bomb somewhere in it.

And even now, still a good chance of me doing something a bit stupid before I hit the boss.

The only stage more annoying is stage 4, definitely. Just BAH to that stupid level. At least the boss of that one isnt bad.

Ed: did you see this one?

(has talking in place of game sound, may as well play it muted)

Short and to the point, I think. The guy loses all three lives on the first enemy. :?

Classic.

The first video I saw was a player's run on Hard through the first level or two. That guy was killing that enemy as soon as it appeared - maybe you've gotta tweak the autofire settings, I dunno lol
