Raizing shooters

Post by Palmer Eldritch »

OK. Spinning this one off from the Cave shooters thread.

Does a complete list of Raizing shooters ported to home consoles exist and also does anybody have a company profile/history on Raizing?

Off the top of my head...

Battle Garegga (Saturn)
Kingdom Grand Prix (Saturn)
Soukyugurentai, regular and Otokuyo (Saturn)
Soukyugurentai (PS1)

They also did some other stuff, like some Bloody Roar games, but on the shmup front I think that's about it...

Only one (and it's debatable, being a computer release) missing from BM's list is Mahou Daisakusen. It was ported to the Sharp X68000...

You definitely shouldn't avoid the games that weren't ported just because, though. Dimahoo is brilliant, same goes for Batrider. If you're not comfortable with MAME, the PCB's of these two are pretty cheap.

Can someone clue me into why Batrider is so brilliant? I haven't really played it much. And why isn't there any review of it on www.shmups.com?

There was a review of it, IIRC, on the old shmups.com incarnation, but I don't know where it might've gone...IMHO it's one of Raizing's weaker efforts; it's got lots of personality and lots of secrets, but the bullets can be tough to see, and there are really stupid spots where graphical overhangs completely obscure what's going on, a la Blazing Star. Style over substance, imo.

Thanks for the review Ord. I'm really curious if you like Batrider better than Bakraid...guess I'll wait for your next review. :D

I didn't know Soukyugurentai was on the PS1, how did that one turn out?

Brave Blade is a really cool modern-type Raizing shooter, with 3-D backgrounds. I doubt if it's ported, but it plays okay in mame.

BTW why do Raizing sometimes call themselves "8ing/Raizing?" Do they have an identity complex or something? Pick a name and stick with it!
SHOOT IT QUICKLY !

I only own the Saturn version, but IIRC the PS version is supposed to have an extra selectable ship, though also a lot more slowdown. I think it might also have some sort of extra mode, though I know little of it...

IIRC Eighting was a "sister company" of Raizing, who eventually bought them out completely...and thereafter shmup production ceased.

Wow, I didn't know about this. That's amazing! Got any more info on it?

Not as good as the SS version I've heard, which isn't suprising since it was developed for STV initially.

This seems like a good place to note that the Kingdom Grandprix high score thread could use some more competitors.

It's got a bit more slowdown than the Gekioh/Shienryu port on Playstation 1. Still fun.

On a sidenote, I really liked the first Bloody Roar game but then I lost interest in the series. Until Bloody Roar 3 on PS2. didn't spend much time fighting in it, though. The only reason we bought it was for the debug mode. comedy gold there, folks.

It looks more blurry at times. It also has a new arrange version with an easier difficulty and where you can play a powerful yellow ship as well as the original version.

That's not exactly true for example Battle Bakkraid is 8ing only is it not?
But both Raizing/8ing stopped developping STG's before merging completely.
Now they make
Kururinrin Series (published by nintendo) and rather excellent.
Bloody Roar Series (published by Hudson Soft) enjoyed by some
Naruto series on GC (Published by TOMY) I heard they are very good havent played any myself

I didnt like Batrider at all. Bakraid I liked a whole lot.

Mind, I am talking gameplay over graphics, if you want graphics I would probably swing it the other way.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Soukyugurentai, regular and Otokuyo (Saturn)
What's the difference between these?

IIRC the Otokuyo version came with a demo of Battle Garegga, as well as a couple of "hidden" musical arrangements from Battle Garegga and Kingdom Grandprix.

On a side note, it supposedly amended the problem of having the game crash when used with a cartridge.

I have the non-Otokuyo version, mind you, and though I now run it off my Jap Saturn, I never had any problems with it when I used it with the old Datel Key.

I'm not 100% sure, but Soukyuu Gurentai: Oubu Shutsugeki was not a Raizing/Eighting work.

Is that the PS1 version, or something entirely different?
Data East had some influence on the PS version, but I´m not sure to what extent.

I already own a cabinet with ESP Ra.De. Which are the best and most reliable sites on the net for PCBs? Any recommendations?

I haven't played Batrider much, but in the first level when the giant sign falls over, I know I'm playing something special :)

For whores of cool stage designs and bosses, Batrider is your dream shmup. :P

Plus, it's got about 25 different ships to choose from....

It came out several years ago, so it seems rather unlikely...
