Any interest in a casual North Carolina (NC) shmupmeet?

Post by astrodan88 »

I'm a long time shmup fan who recently started collecting seriously. I haven't made the leap into PCBs but I have (I think) a reasonably good selection of console and PC fare. I've browsed these forums regularly (and gleaned much wisdom) but never posted anything myself. But I've been wanting to get together with some fellow shmupers and have never seen anything posted for my state so I thought I would test the waters. So, if there is anyone out there close to Greensboro, North Carolina that would be interested in a casual shmup weekend, let me know. Thanks!

I'm in NC myself as well(near Charlotte). I've been a shmups.com lurker for awhile :). Although, I'm more of a shmup fan than a player; I hardly have time to play games anymore. Not that I was ever any good at shmups.

Another member here by the name of Strider77 posted this a couple of months ago, about an annual anime convention in Raliegh.

Animazement Website: http://www.animazement.org/

I have been to animazement a few times and I can say that it can be pretty fun. Obviously, it helps if you also like anime as the gaming portions is minimal compared to the anime craziness going on. It does have a game room setup every year. Mostly fighters, but I've played some shmups there in the past. If Strider77 can get some more shmups in there this year, this would probably be a good location for a NC shmupmeet.

They have a large selling section as well. Again 99% anime items, but there were a few videogame dealers. But I was thrilled last year when I picked up some awesome Super Famicom games from Mad Gear(ebay nick:16-bit) including Rendering Ranger. He had a shitload of Saturn/PSX/Genesis/etc. imports as well. His prices in person are better than his ebay prices for sure and he's a cool guy.

That sounds great; I am definitely going to check animazement out. As I mentioned, I have yet to leap into PCBs so the prospect of getting my hands on an actual cab or two is exciting. Thanks KyleRXZero for the heads up! :D
In the meantime though, if anyone in the area wants to do some casual shmuping, let me know. We don't have to call it a Shmupmeet if that sounds too official. My hi-scores are nonexistent, so no worries.

I wouldn't mind going up there maybe once in a while. I live in Georgia so NC isn't too bad of a drive.

I know this is a dead thread (see my join date) but AZ will have at least three Astro City cabs, one being dedicated tate.

I'll definitely swing by on Saturday. I was browsing your site in your sig there Majors. That's cool that you're hooking the gameroom up like you are. You rock man. :)

Also, it looks like you scored some Astros at the Winston auction? I've heard about that up there, but I've never been. I would have never thought they would have had candy cabs, much less Astros. That's pretty kick ass.

The way I look at it, it's a JAPANESE anime con...it's only fitting to have Japanese cab's to play japanese games! Don't ya think? Plus Strider77 needs to showcase this purchases, since I still only have Viper and Twin Eagle that will work in the tate Astro. (But I did hand craft a stereo cable!)

Thanks for the update on Animazement majors! I hope you don't mind, I lobbed a few questions over at the forum in you sig. I'm hoping to be there but it's still not definite. Where abouts in NC are you? Are there any casual gaming gatherings outside of Animazement?

Best time to game-it-up is at Luckys during a tournament. The next one is May 10th. Details here. After every tourney there is a unoffical after party in Winston. Unoffical as in we don't want everyone to come, not all gamers are socialible.
