Is R-type 3 GBA Advance that bad?

Post by dczx »

I've read the reviews and they all say it's horrible because of collision detection, sound, etc...

has anyone played it? Is it worth getting? Is it possible to finish? Thanks.

I have it, I tried to play it. The collision detection is truly one of the things that kills the game. Your own hitbox is very large (especially seems to extend beyond the rear of your ship), whereas the hit area for your full level 2 charge shot is smaller than the sprite. Either that or the level 2 shot is only marginally more powerful than level 1.

The force device is not very obedient either when you fire it, and I think there is a bug with the shadow force as well, you can't collect it the first time using the button, you actually have to fly up to it...

I'm pretty sure there are more problems, but I haven't played it in so long.

I had no problems with this game. As far as collision detection goes, that's something you have to work with with pretty much every R-Type game. And at least this game has all original stages and doesn't rip off of R-Type II, like SNES R-Type III did. Go for it, IMO it's a great game.

Pretty much every R-Type game I've played has a collision detection that extends beyond the ship, and I had no problems with the force.

Nah, definately something wrong with its hitbox. Often as not the level 2 charge will pass through weenies without doing any damage. This is my biggest problem with the port; the level 2 charge is too unreliable to be useful, so you're stuck with level 1s or the Hyper shot.
I'm pretty sure there are more problems, but I haven't played it in so long.
The Cyclone Force doesn't yo-yo like it's supposed to; launching the Force into a wall causes it to go through the wall (it should stop); bits don't fire with a fully powered up red weapon; the scoring is totally wacked (5 points a peon in level 1, then up to 50 in level 2); etc.

I'm sympathetic to the way Raylight got jerked around while porting this, but the fact remains this port got pushed out the door before it was finished.

Err... you're thinking of Super R-Type. R-Type III on the SNES is the same game as the GBA version, only without all the bugs.

Yes there is something dreadful about this conversion. The game is simply broken, which Zack Keene and iatneH have already pointed out. Add the very slow rate of fire and it just becomes a mess.
Shame really.

Not mention the fact that the music is horribly butchered. The fact that it's a horrible port is really disappointing, III is easily my favorite in the series (and one of my favorites of all time).

It's from an April Fools joke from Irem (that Working Designs also played off of.)

I had a feeling it was fake, Damn them! I would have smiled at the thought of another R-type coming out after the great Gradius V, but then the whole "Final" thing would be stupid.

I'm still waiting for a new Darius and Thunder Force game.... But how likely is that though.......

R-Type III for GBA is perhaps the only shmup that I have ever sold. I just thought it sucked; no fun at all.

Its an absolutely appauling conversion of the Snes game, The graphics are botched and the game play and flow is broken.

The experience is what you'd expect from a cut and paste shmup take on Mugen. Nasty stuff.

I liked Final quite a bit. I didn't like the level design quite as much as some of the other games in the series, but the huge selection of ships and all of the little tributes to other games (R-Type and not) were awesome. I also thought that the final boss fight was a nice end to the series, even if it wasn't the most difficult boss ever. The music disappointed me, though. It wasn't bad, it just.. wasn't really there. I would have liked something a little closer to the first 3, but what it came with was fine. It added to the mood of the game a lot. The slowdown was a problem as well. Still, even with its downsides, I feel like it was a fitting end to the series and I enjoyed it quite a bit. And while it felt a bit tedious at times, I had fun unlocking all of the ships.

And yeah, my avatar was part of Irem's 2005 April Fools joke. It was an awesome joke, but it was one of those kinds that gets your hopes up really high, only to have them plummet back down a second later when you realize it's April Fools day. It's a pretty cool logo, though.

Really, though... Irem has the best April Fools jokes. The R-9 personal model debut was hilarious, and that's only one of them.

My mistake Zach; I didn't realize that it had the same stages; the first stage, though, did look pretty different to me.

I just traded Final on Gametz. I tried SO hard to like this shmup, but I just couldn't. It's simply too slow, and while there is a huge variety of ships to unlock, some of them have pretty much the same weapons.

For me personally, the series ended with Delta, and that's pretty much it. *shrugs*

You're missing out on R-Type final. It's worth sticking with. It sounds like I'll pass on the GBA version unless anyone has one they would like to unload for a few dollars. =) PM me if you want to get rid of an old copy cheaply. :)

I'm buying it sometime in the future. I think. Hrm. It's rare to find shumps around here and this saturday I found a copy in the local gameshop, so I figured I'll give it a go.
it's not hiphop, it's electro
