Twiddle's talking about what Icy does on his own forums.
My sincere apologies Twiddle

EDIT: Now I look at Twiddles initial post that I was on about - It's quite obvious. Teach me not to read thoroughly.

On topic - it seems here we're all talking about two different takes on what a review is. And I think those two types of review do and should co-exist.

There's the all encompassing top-to-bottom explanation of every element of a game, with scoring mechanics and everything meticulously detailed (let's call that a 'specialist review'), and there's the more mainstream review that just tries to get a across the feel and value of a game to please a customer conidering spending some hard earned cash (a 'consumer review'?).

And I think those two types of review do and should co-exist. If you did a Venn diagram of the two types they would hugely overlap, so it seems they're well placed to co-exist, but I think I'm right that some people see one kind as the right way to do it, whilst seeing the other kind as the wrong way to do it...

Here they call those shmup treatises and they go in the strategy section.

The 'general' one is the super-set, the 'treatise' is the sub-set. The latter is more informative than the former hence a sub-set. In order to get a sub-set, you need to add an extra condition to sort it out, like 'study of gameplay'. In notation, it's:

'Review':={{clueless}, {treatise}, {critique}, {etc}}

From this, you can 'extract' {treatise}, so you get:

'treatise':={review} & {treatise}--> {treatise}

Of course if one thinks that only treatises are reviews, then there is only one element in the set:

'review'='only treatise':=X={{clueless}, {treatise}, {critique}, {etc}} & X={treatise}

i.e. one can say 'yeah, we may entertain other stuff (the X) but in practice only treatises qualify for reviews'.

Hmm... well then, some people here seem to expect some mainstream reviews to be fairly close to 'treatise', which seems a little much to ask...

Not that I'm justifying mainstream reviews that miss the point, as they are just a waste of space. It's just mainstream reviews have a very different job to do...

This thread seems to point out that 'people' only care about spelling, which magically doubles as some kind of hardcore knowledge of zomg l33t gameplay (whatever it is). Considering how some 'people' actually speak English (let alone spell it), the whole point of spelling becomes vastly trivial and idiotic.

I completely missed icycalm's ban. Ah well. I just noticed that Fighter17 picked up a ban too.

I'll go have a look at the review, nothing to lose I guess.

One thing about Ikaruga, it is one of the few shmups that makes for a great superplay, 'cause it's all pretty n stuff :)

The fact that he even mentioned his Internet pissing match in that recent article just goes to show he's really gone off the deep end. Completely unprofessional, makes him look like a whiny little kid who's angry that other people don't agree with him on everything. You don't write an article that's an excuse to bring up an internet flame war unless you're hopelessly butthurt.

I wonder if someday, he'll wake up one morning and realize he's wasted half his life raging and tormenting himself over minor language schematics, and what other people think of videogames on the internet. Maybe not .. it would be humorous to see a 80-year old Icycalm in a nursing home, still bitching and whining about those mean evil IGN reviewers for whom it's physically impossible to understand the games they're reviewing. :roll:

And yes, it is extra hilarious that he will ban people from his forum for posting about him on other, completely different forums.

Icycalm actually said this in an email to me. My comment:

"It's just that, if Time magazine decided one day "games as art?" was a big cover story, and wanted to get all the sides of the coin, your article would probably be a very pertinent argument against the concept. They'd probably side more with the guy gushing about Rez as the new-medium then some angry guy calling people fuckwits and accusing them of artfaggotry, though. How broad you make that appeal is your own choice."

He replies

Adam, Time magazine... sucks. If they paid me to mention my article I'd tell them to go fuck themselves. If they run an article about an issue that's been closed for nearly 100 years, all they'd succeed in doing is proving one more time how much they suck. There is NOTHING to say on the subject other than: "Learn how logic works, moron".

>How broad you make that appeal is your own choice.

I am making it as narrow as possible. I am basically making the website that I myself would like to read, so once I succeed I should only have one reader. Me.

>your article would probably be a very pertinent argument against the concept.

You have not understood the article.

I couldn't falsificare something that narcissistic, I promise you.

The guy is insane. He's like a Bond villain. He's hilarious. I feel sorry for him. Even more funny is his insistance of quoting Wittgenstien every other sentence. It really is quite sad that someone who claims to be so be so enamoured with philosophy seems to have only managed to make it through one book. My sister has a more rounded philisophical knowledge, and she's only just made it through her first year of university.

For added lulz, everyone who posts on Insomnia should be IP banned from shmups post haste :lol:

You can generally identify stupid people by their insistence on substituting logical argument with the use of insults, swearing and foot stomping, which are usually employed as a method of compensation.

But what about dem shootin' games? I give Ikooragura 6 thumbs up.
