 What I mean is that culture can mean SO many different things ranging from art to politics to history to sport... to kinky porn , to just say one likes the culture of something, and not really go into detail about anything (as I often heard in my Japanese class) seems to be not be very genuine. But your experiences may vary.

I agree. It's either a gag, or it's some weeaboo who thought he loved Japan because all he ever knew about Japan was through anime and looked at the country through rose-colored glasses and saw it as some goofy utopia, just like this cockmuncher. Geeks don't get a lot of respect in America, either. People think it is cool to go see the latest Spider-Man flick in the theater, but they think you're weird if you actually buy and read the comics.
Tempest wrote:Also, he was baffled by the lack of public trash cans and that people are expected to hold onto their own garbage till they get to their home or business (He went so far as to take a picture of one public trash can he found, which he claimed was "The only fucking trashcan in the entire goddamn city")
You mean he didn't go outside the station and look at the baskets of the bicycles parked outside? Those are the unofficial trash cans!

Tempest wrote: He did claim that while he was there he enjoyed the fact that Japanese women dress and act much more dignified and with more self-respect than most American girls he has met. He said he loved the fact that not one of the girls there was just waling around in a cut-off shirt with some sweats with "Juicy" written on the ass.
I'm with him on that one. There are plenty of Japanese women who dress like total pinheads, but it's more respectable than chicks who think the only way to be attractive is to show as much skin as possible. I'd take "humiliatingly goofy" over "humiliatingly slutty" any day.

I hate this crap too. I'm sick of those stupid celebrity magazines that won't leave those poor fools alone. It's all about how Brad Pitt leaves Jennifer Anniston for Angelina Jolie, and how those idiots adopt children (they can do it so much faster than anyone else, even though they are the last ones who should be allowed to adopt anything human).

That's part of an exciting consumerist culture. Building up and tearing down, either way there's a killing to be made.

I will never get tired of the food over here in Nagasaki. The fish is super fresh along with unagi and great vegtables. The ramen and it's more Chinese influenced brother champon are freaking delicious.

I would have to say that my biggest complaint of Japan is the crazy level of noise pollution that is acceptable in public places. You got the screetching "IRASHAIMASEEE!!!!!!". Some time said in a torturous voice. Then in stores you also got the automated recordings of screamed messages that loop over and over again. My heart goes out to the shop people,,,

Then of course you got your mobile advertisers on wheels that blasts adds from a PA system on the roof of a van. The same strategy is used by political figures and the ultra nationalists but with louder volumes.

And to say nothing of bosozoku (bike gangs)[/i]

Japan sounded great until I read some stuff about the criminal justice system. Kinda took the shine off of it.
Feedback will set you free.

They can hold a suspect for 20 odd days without access to a lawyer and have been criticized for the way they interrogate suspects and get confessions.

I've been thinking about applying for the JET program. I've been to Japan before, so I'm aware of the weird/messed up society. I'm sure I could survive over there for a year.

That's what I was implying. They'd be better off getting a dog or cat instead of a human life since they're such fuck-ups. Then again, even taking care of an animal may be too much for those celebrities.

Yes, I read about this in the newspaper once. I'm not at all surprised. Japan also has a very high conviction rate, perhaps because just by being accused of something leads judges to believe that they are guilty. This phenomenon will be amplified even more for foreigners living in Japan, since obviously gaijin are the source of all of Japan's problems and how JET teachers are corrupting Japan's youth.

On the flip side, it is actually hard to get arrested. You need to be suspect of an actual crime (drug possession, beating the living piss out of someone, rape, etc.). I have been arrested (twice in fact) for almost nothing in the US. Of course there, you're out the next day. Anything less will usually result in you getting the talk of shame either at the spot where the incident occurred or at the police station. I was driving a scooter without a license or insurance and bumped into a lady. Generally that's a big no-no, but they let me go. They generally just call your wife and/or boss, and call you back in a few weeks to make sure you paid for the damages.

Their high conviction rate can be attributed to such late arrests. They generally have quite a case (or flat undeniable proof) before making said arrest... that can be criticized as well. Apparently they had tips on Lucy Blackman's murderer weeks before they ever went out there.

What you guys are talking about isn't really all that bad. It's the prison system that's fucked up:
-Inmates are on a 4-degree honor system. The lowest rank gives you basically no visitation rights, and only 2 letters a month (or something like that)
-Your family is notified of which prison you will be stationed at the day you are sent, by letter. Nobody can call them.
-You have to walk around prison in a military style march (arms and legs flailing)
-Solitary confinement isn't in a dark room. You sit in a well lit room, zen style, staring at a wall (and are monitored)
-Very little exercise (or bathing)
-Death Row inmates are not burdened with such things as the day of their execution until the day of, or at most the day before.

I've been reading a book on the system (written by a former inmate). I need to finish that damn thing

Unless they get a fucked-up little dog that they turn into a fucked-up piece of plastic when it dies.

p.s. took greg long enough to figure out what I was implying :D

Well, I started it well over a year ago. I don't read much of anything to be honest. By the time I get the little guy to bed, I can't be bothered to think.

yeah, I barely get around to reading much either, and when I do I usually don't finish what I start reading. I can't even remember the last time I finished a book.

I'm genuinely interested in things like prisons and other social issues, but when it comes to reading I usually get bored and start playing Trizeal, or do something completely stupid like browse 4chan.
