Emulation of new Cave shmups
Anyone dares to bet how many years left until we see new Cave shmups emulated in MAME?

maybe when the 360 ports are out some progress will be made, only suggesting that because it would be a lot easier to examine the game data which would be unencrypted in a pc related file format, and compare against the arcade data.. but I'm not sure what is encrypted on the arcade versions so it may be no help at all if it is the actual game code. (just thinking of how cps2 was figured out via the unencrypted cps-changer comparison stuff)..
But really, it doesn't seem like this stuff has as much attention from a lot of dedicated people as the neogeo, cps1 and cps2 emulation efforts had..

Just fyi, PS2 emulation is coming along nicely. I've tried the recent build of PCSX2 emulator on my work machine (Athlon X2 4800+, 1 GB 667 MHz RAM, integrated graphics card), and it's been able to run Mushi at 20-25 fps. I believe I'd get up to 25-30 with a discrete graphics card easily, which is already quite good for a thing such as PS2 emulator.

Actually it's there. It just doesn't work yet. Unless they took out the entry in some future mame (after .112), it should still be in "Not Working".jpj wrote:not on mame:

I personally would like to play it myself. I don't like people comparing it to the others and saying "it sucks". It wasn't made by Cave, so you really can't blame anyone. If you want to blame Cave, blame them for licensing it to IGS to begin with.

No. They will be ports, and so incomparable code-wise - otherwise someone would be using Mushihimesama and Ibara to crack SH3!kemical wrote:maybe when the 360 ports are out some progress will be made
The encrypted PGM boards are not yet broken, let alone SH3. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting, tbh.

i'd seen galuda running on a ps2 emu a while back. ran out a whopping 5 frames per second. pointless. and mushi running at 20 frames per second, was that even worth downloading? and how cheap does a person have to be to emulate a ps2...?

It's not really a question of expecting things for free. It's not even a question of affording a Japanese PS2. I'd rather have the opportunity to try it out before making the investment. Same with MAME. I try demos on my PC before I buy a game; why can't I do the same through emulation?freddiebamboo wrote:Exactly, why bother when a JP PS2 is relatively cheap and allows you to play a shed load of cave and psikyo![]()
Mame has made people expect everything for free it seems...

that can be an advantage. although when i get a game i don't like, i can usually re-sell for a similar value. but playing mushi at 20 frames per second on a pc probably isn't going to give you an accurate idea of whether you'll enjoy it on ps2. or just read the latest write-up of said game on insomnia.ac
i do think there are a lot of breadcrumb-snatchers on 'tinternet though
if the whole ketsui dump project is anything to go by, investing any time or money into emulating cave boards will probably be a big waste of your time.

I agree with everything you've wrote here.jpj wrote:that can be an advantage. although when i get a game i don't like, i can usually re-sell for a similar value. but playing mushi at 20 frames per second on a pc probably isn't going to give you an accurate idea of whether you'll enjoy it on ps2. or just read the latest write-up of said game on insomnia.aci do think there are a lot of breadcrumb-snatchers on 'tinternet though

Watch a superplay or youtube vid, you see the pretty much what the game is going to do.Square King wrote:It's not really a question of expecting things for free. It's also well known that the major games on the PS2 are ported to a high - or at worst acceptable standard, it isn't really a risk forking out the money for the PS2.

i do the same. and can usually make a decision after that if i wanna buy or not. and if it's youtube, it takes minutes, and no faffing about. whereas with mame you could end up not buying a really good game just because you've downloaded a shitty rom version that doesn't play well.freddiebamboo wrote: Watch a superplay or youtube vid

If I would've based my opinion on Soldner X purely on gameplay vids, I probably would've bought it. Since I demo'd it, I passed. I understand what you guys are saying and where you're coming from. I just wish I could afford to spend my money on a huge arcade setup and not have to worry about emulation. As it stands, I enjoy shmups as a hobby (to the point where I built my own stick with Sanwa parts) but not to the point where I can drop hundreds on a PCB alone. So emulation is a big player for me.
