That's my take. I dislike most of Cave's music but they do come up with some pretty decent stuff once in awhile... Ibara soundtrack is probably my favorite off the top of my head. As far as ZUN's stuff goes, I do actually like it quite a bit -- it epitomizes videogame music -- but it does get a bit samey after a while, and isn't exactly listening material.
We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
Hmm, yeah, I'd agree. Only Taito shmups I ever play are Layer Section and Darius II, though.
edit -- oh yeah, let's not forget Konami either. Gradius has a sound
all its own.

I'm not too familiar w/ Touhou music, but saying anybody's music is better than Cave's shouldn't raise too much of a stink because I really don't think Cave is known for their "amazing music." I see Cave's music as "gets the job done."

That. Cave composers usually do better boss themes, though. The rest is just as cheesy, if not more cheesy, than ZUN's stuff, but at least ZUN has more beautiful melodies.

Geez, i must be the saddest guy on the forum,as i have a few cave ost's that i regularly listen to on my ipod whilst at work.
I really think that the tunes convey the feel of the games superbly, and often find myself humming them.
C'mon,Espgaluda 1/2? Whats not to like?

Aside from ESPGaluda and the between-DDP-and-DOJ era, that's the only thing they do well.

That's all he does well. Which is why a lot of the doujin arrangements are so good even if his music sucks. I kind of liked the PC-98 soundtracks better, back when he had to keep it simple.
Well, after playing Shoot the Bullet for many many hours, I'm still fond of its music, and that's considering how much I listened to it non-stop in looped form while playing. His melodies in EoSD and PCB need higher quality instruments, though, that's for sure. They sound too tinny after his later works.

ESPGaluda 2 is by far the best Cave OST. It sounds like it could stand on it's own as actual music, away from the game. Mushi OST is nice, but I can't really say the same - it still sounds too much like videogame music.
