Re: Underrated Shmups ?
My thoughts - nobody may care but you're getting them anyway:
Cyvern - the hitbox on this game screws me up always. I'd rather be playing a Strikers game.
Air Gallet: Don't let it take off! Good stuff. I think I want to buy this board sometime.
Eco Fighters: This one has a Gleylancer-like rotating ball thing, right? Hate those.
Kyukyoku Tiger 2: I'm still working on my highscore for this game. I usually enjoy it, but it's not very balanced - the Blue Smasher is complete crap, the default red weapon does poor damage but allows you to consistently leave the stage 1 midboss with ~90K points, and the green one kills everything, sometimes too quickly (move off to the side and hit the enemies with the homing missiles for more points). The bomb & powerup setting is also pretty lol, as that is basically the only scoring mechanic that matters. From what I can tell, the rank of importance for scoring is: stacking bombs & powerups (and not dying ever) > killing bosses > collecting stars.
Macross Plus: Nonplussed by this game when I last played it.
Varth: Too many stages o_O
Viper Phase 1: 1 popcorn enemy missed = bonus cleaved in twain
XII Stag: Don't have, can't play. That demo player sucks though. Whenever there's an enemy that shoots a harmless shot spread out to the sides, I go straight to the middle...
For my part, I think the first two Raiden Fighters games are somewhat underappreciated. Not a whole lot going on scoring-wise, but the medal mechanic is easier and makes for relatively lo-stress playing compared to RFJ (restart restart restart)

I tend to think maybe the first RF is. It seemed to suffer from less feature creep than the later installments (who needs 20 ships to choose from?).Ed Oscuro wrote:For my part, I think the first two Raiden Fighters games are somewhat underappreciated. Humans, think about what you have done

Yes, the first one is the one I play the most now. Though I should probably try to improve my RFJ score, heh.

I really like Radirgy, but Karous not so much. It's the unwanted red headed stepchild to Radirgy.deddonpachi wrote:I think the milestone shmups are uderrated! I really like especially Karous and Radirgy.
I think Triggerheart Exelica is grossly underappretiated. I really have tons of fun with that game. I don't understand people's problems with it at all.

You're kidding me, right? Donpachi is slower paced, easier, and less interesting than Super Star Soldier (which I love, just by the way) until like what, stage 5?Also I think Donpachi is at least twice as good as Dodonpachi.
You guys have lost all rights to complaining about how sedate and boring touhou games are =P Donpachi? Fucking seriously? I actually had to pop it in and play it again just to make sure I wasn't missing something... And... I wasn't...

There's an arcade near my workplace with a Macross Plus cab. That thing is extremely annoyingly cheap. It has the biggest amount of point-blank shots per minute in the shmup history. And also it has a big number of "Shots that come from nowhere because the enemy ship shooting it was out ot the screen" cases.
I do play a few credits there sometimes, but as I found another arcade nearby which actually has GIGAWING, I didn't feel like going there anymore

Donpachi is a million times better than DDP. Not that being better than DDP means much though.
Also, I loved Chaos Field, maybe because my expectations were so low... and Sol Divide isn't the absolutely worthless stinking piece of the worst kind of crap everyone says it is. I actually liked it a lot.

DP = cool music, chain system is there but it's extremely easy to ignore and it's neither frustrating nor heavily based on memorization;Vincere wrote:I'm waiting for some serious arguments leaning towards DP>DDP because I personnaly find DP to be pure and premium shit.
DDP = worst soundtrack I've ever heard in a video game, and that alone would be enough reason to like DP better. But there's also the whole "chain your ass out" thing, which ruins all the fun I could possibly have with it.
