My brother just returned from a trip to japan. He says they have a gang problem there. He said that he heard that, at the festivals, gangs manage the booths and sell "Taco Balls" at the booths.

He said he heard it from lots of people.

I went to Africa because I liked that Ace Ventura movie, but it wasn't what I expected. Less laughter, more AIDS.

Any idea who created that? It was sent to me by someone with a gamefaqs address maybe it's a clue as to it's origin.

FUCKING WIN. I thought I'd go to a radio and listen to Aerosmith and Tone Loc but that didn't translate any enjoyment either.
He says they have a gang problem there.
Japanese Guardian Angels. Fixed.

Those right-wing Japanese nationalists are more comical than threatening, maybe they were holding up the wrong banner.

Sounds like a pretty common story. Some idiots comes on the JET program to realize lots of creature comforts he enjoyed in the west are not here

-Decent snack food
-Cheap air conditioning (this hurts if you're on a budget)
-Lack of getting anywhere quickly
-Expense

Some people have to learn the hard way.

I have a friend who was just denied a place on the JET scheme, despite showing some early promise. Perhaps what you said will console him :)

I felt that way when I moved from Texas to Missouri but I got over it.

I felt that way when the Army stationed me in Germany but I got over it.

I felt that way when I went to Summer Scout camp but I got over it.

I felt that way when I started going to school but I got over it.

I guess my point is, so what? Is he 9 years old?

People, food, conditions, attitudes, customs are all different everywhere you go. You have to get used to it or just stay home.

Not to be unsympathetic but If he cant change his situation or accept & become a part of it then he needs to man up & shut up!

If this specific notice isnt real you know there are still many people who do feel like this in & from every country there is. Maybe they can all form a little "I hate my life right now ( & probably forever )" support group.

BTW, to all you Germans, I love Germany & have very fond memories of my stay there! But it was tough for a 17 year old boy soldier away form home for the 1st time...

How do you get denied from JET? Do you have to outright say that you're going for anime merch and hopeful pity sex, instead of it just being implicit?

The guy was probably expecting a picnic in some kind of utopia .

I remember my first Japanese classmates. There was this white wapanese dude with a dragon and kanji tattoo on his left arm that looked suspiciously wrong. He just wouldn't shut up about how everything in Japan was so much better than here and how much he knew about the country. He's the kind of idiot who would tell the teacher she was wrong when discussing Japanese grammar and stuff . I remember him lording over the class when nobody knew five hiragana and katakana. That moron thought he was a Japanese major just from that, but he just made an ass of himself because I pretty much memorized Kana and started Kanji after a month or so and he sat next to me . He was in my next two classes and towards the end was just a fucking crybaby who made all kinds of excuses for sucking so much. He once showed me an application for JET and told me how much better he would get at Japanese if he just went to Japan.

Yeah, right. That's coming from an asshole who couldn't master kana in about 9 months. I wonder if he actually went to Japan . Maybe I should've told him that living in any foreign country sucks ass until you have a firm grasp of the language and get used to it.

I had a couple of friends go this past Christmas/New Year's to Tokyo to meet up with a buddy who is a transfer student at Waseda Universtiy. They both had a great time overall, but my one friend (the typical overweight, somewhat rowdy American) had a couple of issues. It took him a while to get used to the food, but after a few days they had a few staple places down. Also, he was baffled by the lack of public trash cans and that people are expected to hold onto their own garbage till they get to their home or business (He went so far as to take a picture of one public trash can he found, which he claimed was "The only fucking trashcan in the entire goddamn city")

Apparently his biggest issue was the fact that no one over there acknowledges anyone in public places. For example if you bump into someone, you're lucky to get any response, let alone an "Oops" or "Sorry" He said it was refreshing for the first day or two because he didn't have to worry about panhandlers or bums at all, or just the usual assholes that roam the streets of a city like NYC, especially during the night. But apparently during his trip back to their hostel on the fifth night (After a number of drinks) he just went off on my buddy who lives there in the middle of the street about that aspect of the culture, and of course, people just walked on by like nothing was happening, much to his chagrin.

He did claim that while he was there he enjoyed the fact that Japanese women dress and act much more dignified and with more self-respect than most American girls he has met. He said he loved the fact that not one of the girls there was just waling around in a cut-off shirt with some sweats with "Juicy" written on the ass. Overall he said he would love to go again and see another city like Osaka or Kyoto, or just go to different areas of Tokyo that he missed, but he said he would go mental if he had to live there.

My cousin is in JET at Osaka right now and from what he told me about the way the program is going, since their funding has dropped in recent years. Also, with am influx of private organizations becoming more popular for school districts in the cities, JET is pretty much pulling out of the major metropolitan areas. They have no one in Tokyo, and apparently they are getting out of Osaka (My cousin said he was EXTREMELY lucky to get where he did and will most likely be one of the last remaining JETs in his area/district) as well as Nagoya (sp?). Couple that with the fact that everyone in the JET program starts off thinking they are going to the urban/suburban areas and you can see why their numbers are dwindling. If you want to get in for sure, you say you want to teach in a rural area, but be warned, they will usually put you in the buttfucking boonies if you let them. One of my cousin's friends was teaching at a village where they felt it necessary to have a priest bless his scooter to keep out evil spirits.

He's mad because he thought his life wouldn't suck anymore. He's still an anime nerd who can't get laid.

Quitting with the anime is a pretty positive step, racist intentions or no.

I haven't watched anime in weeks and yet the girls haven't started flocking yet.

How long does it take for anime to leave your bloodstream?

Depends who you are. It's better to live in Japan as a foreigner than a Japanese. Sure you're a piece of shit, but you get paid more in general, and don't have to stick to any social rules.
Tempest wrote:It took him a while to get used to the food
Tokyo is one of the best cities in the world for food. Yes, you have to struggle to order if you cant' speak Japanese (and don't want to pay for English service) but it really is an unbelievable sight. You could eat at a different place every day and never cover the whole city in your lifetime.
Also, he was baffled by the lack of public trash cans
Yeah, that sucks.
Apparently his biggest issue was the fact that no one over there acknowledges anyone in public places.
This little nugget is what has kept me here for so long. I have my one local bum that has hit me up for change every time I have see him (Japanese won't budge), even from when I lived here before. But for the most part, the anonymity is fantastic. You can imagine the disgust when I went to Hawaii and not only had everyone in my face with their sob story, but sales people up your ass, and every fucking magazine at the check out counter of the grocery about Brittany's fuck ups or Jessica Simpson's cans. As crowded as this place is, there's a certain level of privacy of your life, and other people's that you don't get in the west.
people just walked on by like nothing was happening, much to his chagrin.
To them, he was just another white idiot, I'm sure. As long as there's no weapons involved, nobody cares.
If you want to get in for sure, you say you want to teach in a rural area,
The key is to request a suburb of one of the major cities. A friend of mine requested Kanagawa, which nobody wants to live in. It's about a 30 minute train ride from Shibuya. Of course, he got it.

I like Japan for their games and unsweetened teas, other then that I'd rather move to Russia any day over moving to Japan.

I considering being a Japanese major. But outside of the language, games, and calligraphy, theres nothing else that draws me to the place over any other normal place, so I decided against it (besides French is a little more versatile.)

I have a friend, who is convinced he likes Japan for its "culture"*, but whenever I talk to him about any specific part, like sport or politics, he seems clueless outside of MMA and anime (he likes games, but I know more about games then he, so its a moot point in my mind.) But he seems to be enjoying his time there, so.... that's that.

*I'm convinced that when people say they like some place for its "culture" and don't further upon this point, they're covering for something else or just clueless.

And for the record I can't help but be a little jealous myself!

EDIT: Oh, and I'm coloured too. That could be a problem there, or so I've read.

It can also land you some sweet porn gigs, it's just a matter of your outlook on the situation. But seriously, just walk around saying 「ヘイ・カモン」 and you'll be fine.
