Glitch on the PS2 Treasure pack (Gunstar Treasure Box)?

Post by Carmen »

My cousin asked me to show him a quick game of Alien Soldier yesterday, and immediately I was having a blast demonstrating the game for him. So it occurred to me, why did I stop playing this game? And then I remembered, on the PS2 pack which I have the game on, there was the MOST annoying glitch, in which the score counter would 'roll over' at 99 999 points (or 9 999, it was quite low whatever it was.) For such a score based game (and a very deep score based game), this sort of thing is fatal.

My question: Anyone else experienced this? Is this a flaw in the original version? Is there a work-around it?

I've never had that happen on the PAL MD version.

Have barely played the PS2 port, so I'm afraid I can't comment on that. I might crack it out tomorrow and have a check, though.

Isn't scoring broken anyway? Use the time counter.

In what sense? The scoring system in theory (that is without the rollovers) seems OK to me since you're always on a timer... but admittingly I stop looking further into it because of the discovery of this glitch!

I've never heard of people doing score attacks in Alien Soldier, only speed runs =/

I thought there was infinite milking so time would be the better way to rank.

I didn't even know there was score on Alien Soldier.

If you're playing for score, you're doing it wrong.

I think the true score challenge is to finish the game with as little as possible. No picking up any health items, and finishing off the bosses with 1 second on the clock. That would be way more interesting than milking spawn points. Too bad it would also be looooong.

Thanks for your input guys :P I'll keep that in mind from now on. I had no idea the scoring wasn't even good to begin with... my assumption was that the amount of points you got from basic enemies was very low so there was little point in just trying to milk points from spawn points (something I couldn't confirm because... well... you know why!) I'll work on just speedruns then... at least now I have motivation to play the game again!

Deffo. Just like Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy, it's a game to be enjoyed on a very viceral level. Just bask in the joy of the crazy sprites and music.

Yea, thats probably how I should take it. I remember getting a bit pissed at Stage... 10 was it? With the water and the jumping, that took me out of the game quickly :P
