Mario Kart Wii

Post by scrilla4rella »

I didn't even realize this was out so I picked it up with the quickness when I saw it on the shelf. I've only played it for about 3 hours with one friend. Here are my impressions thus far:

Good-
-Lots more racers on the stage than in MKDD. A max of 12 in both online and offline modes
-While online mode doesn't run at a perfect frame rate it is still very fun and playable. You can play with another human player on your console in races with up to 12 karts. I had a great time playing online.
-The first two cups have some nice looking and fun levels, it also seems to have a ton of levels from the previous mario kart games.
-Definatly more of a throwback to MK64, if your into that sort of thing...

Bad-
-The graphics are SHIT! A very very slight increase from MKDD. After playing Smash Brothers the blocky models of MKWii stick out like a sore thumb.
-So far it seems like there will be no Double Dash-like mode.
-The character's special attacks seem to be MIA.

I just went straight for the GC controller but my friend seems to like the wheel shell. We'll see if he gets better or just continues to loose. The new levels are great but overall my biggest complaint is that it just feels a bit dialed in. There are some improvements but the jump to Wii just can't compare to the leap between MK64 and MKDD.

Nintendo, Do something new. Innovation is not innovation six iterations later.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

had a big session mario wii today with friends and wheels.
Without the wheels this game is pretty lame, we got kinda disappointed after being so excited about it.
With a bit alc it was a nice session, still :)

I was wondering when a topic would be created.

I might place an order when I get home today, been holding off since the JP version is rather pricey. I don't think graphics will be an issue for me since I have never played Brawl nor do I have any interest to do so, and I always thought the graphics in MKDD were pretty good already. I was not too hot on the idea of the motion controls, but I'm starting to get curious.

Opps, Nintendo got me empty handed, again...

My sister just claim back the money of her games I sold some days ago, and I pretty cash is now down to USD 7.50 ....

It seems that I won't have money for a new game till mid-June.

The game comes in a big carboard box with a standard white DVD case inside.

I'd say if you really liked MKDD then check it out because it's more like MKDS and MK64 but with MKDD's framerate and detail

Can you jump in this game? That is one thing that I really could not get used to in Double Dash, the lack of jumping. It's fine in Super, 64, Super Circuit, and DS.... I just couldn't adapt well to the drifting in Double Dash.

yeah, the little hop is back. There are also many of these half-pipe like jumps that allow you to get boosts and dodge obsticals. Probably one of my favorite additions. The new levels are really nice. I was playing this with a non-gamer buddy online for close to two hours. (the last time he played games was N64 era)

I find this particularly amusing considering we're on the shmups board, a place dedicated to a genre of gaming that, complex scoring systems aside, has had decidedly little innovation over the past 15+ years.

Yeah, Psyvariar 2 really is just Xevious with souped-up graphics.

Xevious was one of the earliest shmups and is easily 10 years beyond my estimated range of decreased innovation.

Who said anything about shmups? One has little to do with the other. I think some shmups are not innovative in a similar fashion however. Just because I'm a member here does not mean that I think every shmup made is the best game ever produced.

Lol!

Asking Nintendo to innovate is like asking the Pope to pray.

MK Wii might not be a shining example, but lets not forget Nintendo's history as the finest innovator in console gaming: full fucking stop.

With a week of annual leave coming up, I just had to get this. It arrived today and I've been having a blast with it all evening. I was surprised both by how solid a piece of kit the Wii Wheel is, and how smoothly it works. I'm still plowing through the 50cc races so I don't know how it holds up at the higher classes yet, but I haven't felt the need to try out any other control configuration yet. Since precision motion sensing is only on one plane for the game, it's not necessary to be facing the TV for accurate steering to be detected. That's good for me when I just want to slob out on the bed :P

I've only tried one online race so far. As with Mario Kart DS my impression was that there's no point bothering with online until you're used to 150cc, and especially until you can do Rainbow Road in your sleep.

Everything I'd want or expect from a MK game is in here, with the exception of the mission mode from MKDS, but there are no surprises. I expect that people's enjoyment of MKWii will be inversely proportional to the number of previous MK games they've played. Having only owned MKDS before this the franchise is still relatively fresh to me, and I'm glad of the graphical upgrade over the DS version.

Most fun online multiplayer(global races!!!) to date.
It's getting ridiculous how much fun I have with that game.
Biggest failure u can make: Giving up after a couple of races, because of the "insane amount of things happening on screen at once".
You WILL get used to it and then you won't stop playing.
u know the typical "ok, just one more race but then its enough" ...yea sure

played this with my nephew...again [laying with the special controller is weird and unusable to me.

for a next gen game, it still looks gamecube...unacceptable...next gen should look next gen.

I played roughly about 10 races and was unimpressed overall. The Wii's graphics are a rip...its nothing but a fancy gamecube. other than the wiimote there is no leap in technology.

I still prefer the N64 version.

I'd too, if there wasnt this enemy "A.I." that always seeks you up, no matter how far away you are.

Innovation doesn't come close to formula. The best selling genres are selling millions of copies of each title and I have no idea why. I don't mind playing a MK esque racer 5 years apart, but these days formula driven franchises are coming out on a bi-weekly basis (with more titles in the works).

MK Wii seems like a breath of fresh air compared to 18 million FPS games that have been released since MKDD.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

They should just put every major Nintendo character in the next Mario Kart. Call it Mario Kart Invitational or something. They can make up for the gimmicky controls and last-gen graphics with even more shameless fanservice.

Nintendo makes me sad these days. Translate Mother 3, you goons.

For all those complaining about the graphics. news flash, the wii is a GC and a half. Nintendo does some tricks sometimes to make it look different in a way you'd think it would not be possible on the GC.

I don't like mario kart at all. I do like racing games though.
The online mode is great. 2 player online mode is a blast and I played it longer than expected, but that was because the online screens/mode/system is so great.
I'd rather play the free GT5P demo than the get this full game, though, but for mario kart/nintendo people, this is the shizzle!

people need to stop complaining about graphics and innovation.
Else just the DD GC or download MK64 VC

I played with wavebird and beat my wiimote wheel playing friend most of the time :D
What else could a mariokart fan ask for? There is nothing to complain about. I personally hate the jump, but I hate the series in general so it's no issue. buy/order/play this game, you will not be dissappointed!

 you blew my mind
Hokuto Shin ken VS Nanto shin ken
Could very well be. I don;t think any self respecting racing fan could like mario kart too much. And let's be honest, it's not about racing that much.
It's a cross between daytona, mario and halo.
Nevertheless I again envy nintendo fanboys, they do get what they want!

As a general rule I hate racing games and I don't even like driving in real life, but I've been a fan since day 1 of Super Mario Kart.

I just got this in yesterday and played it a bit. When I placed my order, I was not thrilled about having the wheel bundled in, but it felt good in my hands even before I started playing the game, and it's really, really fun. I may pick up another wheel locally sometime this week.

Still getting a bit used to controls, drifting while dragging an item mostly.

The wheel is unusable for me, but the game plays great without it. I'm happy I got it.

I hear the wheel is only good for playing in 50cc since it lacks the precision and speed to compete in the higher ones.

Figures, since I just finished all the cups in 50cc last night, barely started 100cc yet.

So what's the weapon of choice for the higher engine classes? Classic Controller? Is it possible to wheelie on the bikes using CC? Hmm, I was thinking of picking up a second wheel later today too. Guess I will grab a second CC while I am at it.
