NES Shmups- Must haves?
I just got an NES for the first time in about 10 years, and aside from a few obvious ones I'm not really sure which games (US) I should look for.
I picked up Life Force, Image Fight and Xevious so far.
Any recommendations?

There's a number!
Gradius, Zanac, and Sky Kid are all among my favs. I also dig Donkey Kong 3, but that may not be for everyone
If you're down with importing, Over Horizon, Crisis Force, and Recca kick ass. Course, you could also probably get repro carts of those made up for cheaper in US NES carts.

A repro Recca is a helluva lot cheaper than getting the actual cart. That thing is rare and expensive.Battlesmurf wrote:A repro might be a cheaper alternative? It's kinda related to this topic. Recca is a beautiful thing. I had looked for one for a long time- maybe getting a US one made would be okay?
Gradius 2 for famicom is really good too. I also liked Gyruss for NES-greatly expanded on the arcade one.
If you're into those gravity type games like Sub Terrainia or Thrust, Solar Jetman for NES is absolutely fantastic, and brutally hard.

Battlesmurf,
I know that you have the best intentions....
I'm sorry that I too brought it up but it just needs to be said at least once. That way, a buyer then knows what they are getting into.
Boots and even repros still deprive the original makers their rightful royalties. Otherwise, NO new games will be made if the creators don't share in the games distribution. Like I said, these are a way of life now, but having been subject to deprived royalties, it is a tough subject on a public forum.

I'd say Gradius II, Final Mission, Robocco Wars, and Parodius Da!
EDIT: Oops, I forgot to mention all of these are imports.

Thanks for all the great replies guys!
I would like to import JP Famicom games, but for now I'm gonna stick to US carts. If there are Famicom games I simply must play I will emulate them. There's just too much other stuff to get first shmup-wise, but I'm gonna get all the US games I can find locally and cheaply. I've got a few local stores with good NES stuff. I picked up the NES today on a whim only because they had Life Force for $2.99 and I wanted to play it.
Earlier this evening I went back and got:
Abadox
The Guardian Legend
Zanac

Consider that having sold a game to its initial owner, this is the only kind of loyalties the creators receive and should receive by retail way of operation. Initial owners reselling those games afterwards brings as much profit to the creators as said games' illegal copying; i.e., none at all. For games that are out of print (see: about all NES games), no first hand market exists, so this is always going to be the case; thus, don't let your morals go ahead of reason.Dragon1952 wrote:Boots and even repros still deprive the original makers their rightful royalties.

It's the forum rules, and they are that way for a reason. Bootlegs are not for discussion because by simply mentioning them, you pretty much advertise them. And earning money by making illegal reproductions of other people's work is not only illegal, it's also immoral. (Downloading an old game to test it/play in an emulator is a different story alltogether.)

The 1990 NES release of GunNac from Ascii is ace...
The USA version of GunNac for the NES (courtesy of Ascii and Compile) is pretty cool in it's own right for it's kick-ass Gunhed/Blazing Lazers-like type of gameplay... ^_~
Edited for content: sentence has been removed...
Yeah, owning the real Famicom cart deal is mucho expensive these days -- not everybody has that kind of $$$ to burn trying to hunt them down for their own personal Famicom cart collection. I can see how reproduction carts would be the only way to play them on the real Famicom/NES hardware aside from just with emulation (if the real Famicom carts can't be found/sourced).

Just like when you post links to emulators and talk about emulators, you're advertising roms. Even if there are no roms at any links. Same situation. No matter the loophole.Ceph wrote:It's the forum rules, and they are that way for a reason. Bootlegs are not for discussion because by simply mentioning them, you pretty much advertise them. Playing commercial games without paying for them is illegal too.

Ceph,
I didn't bring it up first here. In fact I was the one that said it was illegal. The other person removed the pictures and text of the repro carts. Afterwards I felt bad that I was depraving someone of a great game and then posted that everyone should have one....
What else have I said that warrants my posts being edited? Get the facts straight first as others brought it up and have mentioned them before I did and some are still posted. How come their posts aren't subject to editing?

You advise people to buy bootlegs, giving money to pirates.Dragon1952 wrote:With what you just said about NES only, forget what I said and get the RePro RECCA for the NES!
And yes, the same goes for ubersaurus and Battlesmurf.
I mean, what's next? Will we advise everyone to go and buy bootleg Cave PCBs, because "the originals are just so damn expensive"?

PC Engine Fan,
You are WRONG, I did NOT post pictures of what you said. My posted pictures show totally legal cartridges so please correct your post.
I do NOT own any illegal game merchandise and I never will regardless of how much I may want a game that is difficult to obtain. Someone else posted those pictures but it was NOT me!
