PS1 cases for games with 2 discs

Post by Erinu »

I don't know what these are called, but Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 2 both came with 2 discs, in a PS1 case that held both of them.

I recently received a copy of Valkyrie Profile, and while the manual, discs and inserts are in great condition, the outer case is pretty scratched up. I was wondering if it's still possible to buy these, or if there's a cheap game that uses the same style case, maybe to replace/switch it with my VP.

It's Valkyrie Profile, I need to show it some respect.

your best bet? buy a $5 double disc game on ebay. for replacement.

Many PAL games used that kind of double case even if the game was single disc. Examples: Tomb Raider, Lomax, X2, Command & Conquer, Tempest X3 and many others really....

Is it the black part or the clear part? The clear part is the same as what you find on a standard 5mm jewel case.

The cheapest game I can think of to use as a replacement 2-disc case is Ridge Racer Type 4 (the one that includes the RR Turbo bonus disc), dunno if any ones cheaper than that.

Great game, too.

Clear part, but the back of the case also needs a replacement, which I don't think that would cover.

If I remember correctly the PS game cases were very slightly differnt that the average jewel case. If you are nitpicky you would do best to find a cheap 2 disk game.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

That cd case style is known as the "double chubby" (as opposed to slimline). You can get them new from various sites but most want a minimum order. A site called sleevetown.com has them for less than a dollar but the cd trays are black. They sell 10pks of clear trays for $1.50 or you could reuse your old ones. I don't know about shipping though.

Pixel Outlaw is mentioning this fact that many high-profile original Japanese Playstation games came in non-standard double CD cases are true: as with the original JPN ver. of Ghost In the Shell, Macross VFX-2, the original JPN ver. of Ridge Racer Type 4, etc. As to why SCEJ would do this, is beyond me...perhaps to make the instruction manual a tad bit easier on the eyes but at the expense of not fitting into such standard double CD case storage slots in a CD storage rack setting.

There were a few Japanese PSX games that came in a traditional double CD case setup like: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do you remember, Love?, Geppy-X: 70's Anime Robot Series, etc.

Yeah, Skyline's right about picking up a cheap-ass Amercian Ridge Racer Type-4 double CD case on the cheap as a alternative replacement for your Valkyrie Profile game set..... ^_~

Are these what I'm looking for?

Um.. they only sell them in 5's, which sucks, but I don't mind if it's the same.

For Erinu,

Yep, that would fit the bill perfectly for your Valkyrie Profile replacement double CD case situation... ^_~

While on the subject, what do you call the thick cases like for (Zanac x Zanac PSX) which looked like it could hold 2 Disc, but was made to hold only one?

I mean they are cool and stand out, but won't fit in the standard CD holder. What was the purpose of this?

That's what we call "the standard PAL PS1 CD case".
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

IIRC, they only changed PS1 cases from that size to smaller, cd-rack acceptable cases in 98.
