It makes sense to bring up a competition only on the "westerner" scale. It's only a change of scope.
It raises more questions than it answers. You 2-ALL'ed DDP, twice already from what I can tell. Your score is the highest announced in western shmup communities. Do you still have a right to be in the same league with other people on this board? Should only Japanese people be excluded from it? What are the criteria and breaking points for different leagues? Differentiation does make a lot of sense, I'll give you that, but only when it actually takes place. And I'm not sure it does, or at least does it in a sensible way.
PROMETHEUS wrote:Yeah, but isn't credit still an additional motivation and reward ?
For some, it is. Taking back SWY as an example, let me show you the other side of the coin: once a player makes a contract and releases a superplay DVD that becomes famous, they get credit for it. When someone beats that score but doesn't release a superplay DVD because one has already been released, they go unnoticed. Happened with SWY and his hard mode Ikaruga superplay featured on Ikaruga Appreciate DVD, which had since then been beaten. I don't even know who did it. :\

That's the point. There's no real league differentiation.

Ok, well, except sikraiken. On the other hand, sikraiken doesn't post his score here, either.

No league differenciation is fine as well. The Starcraft ladders I'm refering to can be totaly open, some of them are invaded by koreans including professional players and very good players. They just raise the level and rank A+ and push other people down a little and you get B- when you'd be B+ on another ladder with less koreans, but that's fine, it's a ladder and it places you among a population, that you approximately know who it is formed by.
For some, it is. Taking back SWY as an example, let me show you the other side of the coin: once a player makes a contract and releases a superplay DVD that becomes famous, they get credit for it. When someone beats that score but doesn't release a superplay DVD because one has already been released, they go unnoticed. I can appreciate how the same goals can be achieved without being given credit, but it still doesn't make it insignificant or worth nothing. It doesn't make it fair that cheaters can steal credit away from other people.

And in any case, if we're going to constitute a high score board, it's naturally necessary just to keep it accurate and meaningful to make sure fake scores are banned. If that was such a pain in the ass and we were doing the cheater hunt too aggressively, it would be a bad thing, but asking for an inp or a picture of the PCB/port is nearly nothing and does good for everyone in the case of inps or videos.

When I posted my score last year, I honestly forgot it was April Fool's Day.

Nor did I realize how fucking pissy everyone would get at an above average score on ol' Cave shmup :?

It's wrong anyway, my first posts were also "high" scores for cave games including esprade and dodonpachi. I released inps without anyone asking me (why would someone playing on MAME not make inps anyway ?) and no one has ever sounded mean to me because I was "posting high scores without 50 updates".

I may be misremembering, but don't you need wolfmame to record inps? Not everyone uses that specific version of mame (i don't).

ya not all versions record a specific game properly. But really if you're going to make a run for a relatively high score, sinec it's so easy to record why would you not do it @_@

Well, for one, I usually always record my runs of emulated games, but in case with something as DDP, I restart all the time after breaking the stage 1 chain, making the whole procedure of unloading the ROM, restarting recording, waiting for the disclaimer to pass, selecting a ship, etc., quite tedious and time consuming. Takes more time and effort than what I expect it to, since when I'm not recording, I only have to load the state that sends me just before the moment carrier ship drops me, saving time and trouble.

If only recording was as easy as it is with good doujin games, I'd record my runs every time.

yeah but when you make scores over say 50M, you really don't care whether your stage 1 chain breaks or not so it isn't mcuh of a pain to be greeted by that bloody disclaimer every time.
