then they came for icycalm and i didn't speak up because my self-esteem isn't anywhere near that high

then they came for me and by that time there was nobody left to speak up because they were all posting on cave high score falsificare drama threads

Okay, I just want to vent-

I can recall a time (two years ago? three?) when Icycalm did not generally go around polluting threads and stirring up shit. He was knowledgeable, informative, and generally (it seemed to me) pretty helpful. In short, a member of the community in good standing. At some point (and now that I think about it, this might be just after all the Recap nonsense), he just started trolling for apparently no reason. It's a mystery.

Now, this is a niche video game forum -- we're all nerds of one stripe or another. It follows that most of us probably have some kind of nerdly superiority complex. I know I do, but I try to keep it in check. I don't think it's that Icy is unable or even unwilling to do this, but rather that he has been willingly stoking the flames for some obscure reason. Maybe I'm wrong, though, and if so I would like to say a couple of things directed at him:

1. It would not kill you to chill the fuck out.
2. Constantly telling everyone that they don't understand you is not a very
good defense for a journalist. If we universally can't understand you, you're not getting your point across very well.

The problem with Icycalm was that he shat on threads, and twisted them round to be about him instead, and his fucking stupid excuse for a website. I found him to be comepletely disruptive to the board, and was actually thinking about PMing a mod my sentiments regarding him only yesterday. He got what was coming.

I'm in two minds about this at the moment. There were points over the last two weeks where I was thinking he needed to get his ass removed, but now its actually happened I once again find myself questioning whether or not his absence detracts from the character of this forum.

I've got to admit, shmups can be a volatile place - most probably as it290 put it so succinctly, because everyone is viciously opinionated, and none more than Icycalm. The nature comes with the obsession - if we're going to occupy such a niche gaming demographic, and we can defend it to everyone else in the outside world ("That looks like an Atari game!" "You don't know anything about games...") its obvious there're going to be clashes arising here too.

Icycalm was the epitome of this as far as I could tell, the proof being that he built his own website just so he could air his voice and say whatever he wanted.

Sure, he was a bit of a troll, but I think there's some of him in all of us.

If we eliminate all of the most opinionated-and-not-afraid-to-say-it characters, surely we'll all be holding hands and smoking peace pipes.

That's boring.

I think he went beyond being "a bit of a troll". I used to find him pretty funny, and would have been pissed off if he'd been banned, but recently, he's just gone absolutely crazy. His arguments completely swamp the thread, and he makes sure everyone is talking about him. He was also very abusive indeed. In a way i'll miss him, but it's definitely for the good of the forum that he's been booted.

Can anyone point out where I have ever:

-sunk to name calling
-taken offense when someone makes an opinionated statement against me
-get huffy when someone verbally shits on me
-care at all if someone says I suck.

Even when I lambaste the likes of Erinu it is done in a calm and tasteful manner.

Never GP, you always keep your head. I'm not sure what prompted you to defend yourself though (I don't think anyone had a stab at your integrity?!)

Icycalm was definitely getting worse, like he'd given in to being labeled as a troll and resigned himself to the new position. He certainly didn't abuse anyone beyond the boundaries of good taste, he just pissed everyone off because he was stubborn as a mule and wouldn't shut up.

Let us remember: 'Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong they are.'

No, derailing a thread by/and consistently arguing with someone (and over various threads) isn't "tasteful" at all.
