Best Megadrive stick?
It can't be the standard official Sega one? How about the Hori, or the ASCII?

The Official Sega Power Stick is a solid arcade-type joystick in it's own right, albeit, with a three-button setup. Of course, you could pick up a Sega Arcade Stick with 6-button setup as well...
Like undamned has said, it would be best to hack such a Mega Drive/Genesis gamepad and wire up such Japanese Sanwa or Seimitsu joystick & arcade push buttons parts for the ultimate bad-ass MegaDrive/Genesis arcade stick bar none! One can't get any better than with that type of setup... ^_~

I was worried I was going to hear that there weren't any good ones, as I'd suspected it myself!undamned wrote:I don't even know if there was a good one. I'd recommend doing a pad hack and using decent stick.

Having just done my first simplish stick mod maybe a Megadrive stick could be the next project instead of a 'from scratch' PS2 stick build around a 3rd party pad PCB, Anybody built themselves a tasty MD stick?
My official Sega one is a stiff joke...

Fuck the Mega Drive Arcade Power Stick -- it's like stiring porridge. The Hori Fighting Stick Multi is the best stick available for the machine as far as I'm aware. These sticks are much the same as the Hori Fighting Stick SS/PS/PC, only slightly lower build quality. The real selling point it they support Mega Drive, PC Engine and Super Famicom. They crop up now and again on eBay for silly money, but they go for a reasonable amount (£20-25) on Yahoo Japan if you have any connections there.
Having one stick for the whole 16-bit generation is a god-send, and was essential for me as I'm totaling around 10-15 joysticks across formats

Found one Rupert - do you know if they work on PAL MD and SNES?Rupert H wrote:Fuck the Mega Drive Arcade Power Stick -- it's like stiring porridge. Also - saw you walking down Tottenham Court road, last week I think, but your stride was so powerful and you concentration so deep you didn't spot me! I turned round once you'd past and like Kaizer Soze, you were gone.

Yeah, the greatest trick I ever pulled was convincing the world I didn't exist, and like that... Well, you knowspadgy wrote: like Kaizer Soze, you were gone.
The stick should be absolutely fine for PAL machines as none of the controllers had any kind of region lock. Good luck with getting that stick dude.

you can fit a hori stick inside the sega powerstick 3 button thing... (barely) it actually is kind of cool, looks good with a red balltop, would be better with a shorter shaft though. It might also be able to work with the smaller seimitsu sticks that have the same dimensions as the ones you find in hori joysticks.
For a 3rd party stick though, I'd recommend the Capcom power stick fighter.. CPS-A10CA ?? There is a sega genesis version and snes version, also the one from the capcom CPS changer system. There are a ton of other adapters for it shown in the link below. I got one from ebay for pretty cheap a while back.
It is fairly light weight, but definitely a very solid and sturdy controller. It has some nice features, the layout looks a bit odd but feels comfortable, the stick itself is very clicky and loud but not at all terrible feeling, I'd say it is very sensative/responsive.

Hi spadgy
There's a Sigma stick here
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SIGMA-ARCADE-STIC ... m153.l1262
...although it is listed as PC Engine only and the shipping is steep. I've bought a few things of this seller and never had any trouble.
If I remember rightly, JP Super Famicom pads will not work on a UK PAL SNES (95% sure on this, but I am happy to be corrected).

Re: Best Megadrive stick?
Necrobump for a thread I started!
I'm back on my own Megadrive sticks thread from way back, but with different questions.
The official Sega Megadrive Power Stick came in two versions. 3 button and 6 button. The JPN 6 button only (AFAIK) came with microsowitches.
But how to tell them apart unboxed (as I'm buying online looking at unbowed images)?
• The JPN 6B Powerstick has blue 'Start' and 'Mode' buttons, and printed on the front along the bottom: 'Sega Arcade Power Stick 6B'
• Another 6B Powerstick has red 'Start' and 'Mode' buttons, and printed on the front along the bottom: 'Sega Arcade Power Stick II'
• Another 6B Powerstick has black/grey 'Start' and 'Mode' buttons, and printed on the front along the bottom: 'Sega'
I want to buy one, but want to know it's microswitched (so it needs to be Japanese). Can anybody confirm if the grey/red button variants are PAL, US or JPN? Or perhaps that's not a way to tell.

the japanese version of the classic 3-button stick has micro switches as well. Solid stick.3 button and 6 button. The JPN 6 button only (AFAIK) came with microsowitches.
And just check ifog's post here (scroll dow a little): http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... start=6120

Re: Best Megadrive stick?
Great. Cheers Fudoh.
And I just found this, which distinguishes all versions.
Later today (I've been avoiding work for three hours already!) I'll compile all the MD stick info suitable here and perhaps even pop it in the OP).

Mega Drive (and SNES and NES) stick incoming:

Wish it worked on PCE. I also went the Tototek route for it with a Namco Arcade Stick.

Isn't this pretty decent? Mine needs some grease (and to be reassembled, still), though.
I do prefer the plastic top shell to metal but that can be a problem for long-term durability.

absolutely, but the ST2 is *really* rare. Much rarer than the XE-1 Pro for the PCE.

Guess I'd better find all the screws and shit for mine then!
It didn't cost me very much.
The swiveling buttons design is an interesting idea, though I don't see myself using it.

Re: Best Megadrive stick?
Very late to the party, but as far as I know, the encoding protocol for MD controllers is pretty simple and can be constructed using off-the-shelf parts, and PCE controllers are very similar if you are building custom sticks.
As if donor PCBs from official (MD) controllers were not cheap and plentiful enough already...

I would use a stick from Micomsoft (the XE-1st2) of the Capcom Power Stick for MD

Re: Best Megadrive stick?
Sorry for the late reply. That stick is already mine/what i use for gaming. Google Battlestation II. It has clunky joysticks and concave buttons stock but the mounts will take iL joysticks and buttons which were standard in American arcades. With a little mounting plate fun you and should be able to get in a Sanwa stick in as well.

Re: Best Megadrive stick?
The Micmosoft ST sticks very rarely show up on eBay but if you know someone in Japan they may be able to get it for you without too much trouble. Awesome stick though, also works on the FM Towns and x68000. No autofire though like the PC engine version.

The MC Cthulhu board can support many consoles with the right cables, including 16-bit era ones.
