How can Radiant Silvergun be considered an "old school" game? And DoDonPachi for that matter. Most "modern" shooters play very similar to DDP.

I guess "old school" starts at a decade ago... or something.

I suppose. lol

Having River Raid in the same list as Radiant Silvergun and DoDonPachi is just so bizarre.

Desert Strike is fucking awesome. Probably the best game to ever come from EA.

River Raid is fun, but the MSX version is vastly superior against the 2600 one.

And their top 10 list had like 2 or 3 actually good games out of the 10. I'd hardly call that a good list.
Well, that might be because they explicitly said that this is a top 10 for PRE-1998 shmups.

Nah, EA had a crapload of awesome games back in the 8-bit computer era. M.U.L.E., Mail Order Monsters, Archon, The Bard's Tale, etc. They only really started to suck once they hit the Madden era.

I liked Jungle Strike up to that bombing mission where, often as not, I'd slam into the bomb target.

Anyone who doesn't like River Raid and Space Invaders has no soul. It's been scientifically proven.

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only person here who can read.

Anyway, funny that Einhander makes #1 last time and completely misses the list this time.

I think Radiant Silvergun got #1 simply because Ikaruga just came out on XBLA.

River Raid was pretty awesome when I used to play it about 25 years ago. I think it's worthy.

I know MULE, Archon (Which kick ass too), The Bard's Tale, Racing Destruction Set (Which you didn't mention, but also rules) and most of their great earlier stuff (Road Rash is also awesome). Desert Strike still ranks as their best game IMO.

Doesn't surprise me.

Most of these gaming mags consider any type of shmup "retro".

Anyway, its an ok list.

There should be a Gradius on there like Lifeforce or G. Gaiden perhaps. Nice they remembered Compile this time around, but MUSHA? Zanac or one of the Gunhed's woulda been more acceptable, but I'll take what I can get.

I disagree with Star Wars and Fantasy Zone making the top 10. Galaxy/Galaga/Galaga 90 shoulda been in there...and anyone who doesn't remember River Raid must have been born after the Atari 2600.
