Difference is, this time its actually a pretty damn GOOD list. I mean, like, its better than the ones shmups.com typically generates.

MUSHA "requires lightning reflexes and good pattern memorization, especially when you confront the game's numerous screen-sized bosses."

Nice vintage EGM on the end there.

I suppose "classic" shoot'em ups is to distiguish them from "modern" ones (DOOM)?

edit: who wrote this top ten? The IGN guy who cannot pronounce Ikaruga?

Anyway, yes, it has Compile in the top ten. We don't make such a good chart since 2003.

Where else are you going to find
smart controls
Like when you push on the d-pad and the ship moves, or you hit a button to fire. You can even press two buttons at once to do something that can be accomplished with one. 8)

I was surprised they included Dodonpachi, and also that they DIDN'T include Ikaruga.

And their top 10 list had like 2 or 3 actually good games out of the 10. I'd hardly call that a good list.
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."

If you're going to let one 16-bit console shooter in it should be Lightening Force. Credit for that, and also not picking TF3.

I'd replace the non-shmup Star Wars with something like Salamander. Or Gradius V. Then I could use it.

One problem. Gradius V isn't retro, which is what that section is about. DoDonPachi and Radiant Silvergun could be debatable in terms of being "retro" as well.

well, as retro as a 2004 title can possibly be (of course that's a compliment)

Einhander is awesome, shut up.

Outtake!
3) Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf
Image
The first entry in the all-too-forgotten Electronic Arts Strike series, Desert Strike puts you in the cockpit of an AH-64 Apache helicopter -- keep an eye on your fuel! Representing western developers magnificently with its unique multi-directional mission-based objectives, this gritty war shooter has originality in spades. It's been released on every available gaming platform of its day and a few after, now if only Nintendo will answer our prayers and add this gem to their shooter-friendly VC roster.

Man, that game was my childhood addiction. I used to have to hide the cartridge under my mattress so no one would get to it before I did and hog the TV.

Genius. I've got a thrift store found copy of the game, never bothered starting it up.

I found Desert Strike and Jungle Strike for the Genesis at a yardsale and I barely played them. I need to give them a play. I was also giving a PC collection with Necular Strike for free. I couldn't get Necular Strike working on my laptop, though.

You should both be flogged for not playing the 16bit 'Strike' games after owning them for as long as you have. They're fun.

As for Nuclear Strike, good luck with that one BrainC. I've yet to find anyting about how to get it to run on XP. Good thing there's a PS1 version (which I own).

Bizarro World D.C.!

It looks like a nice day but the Washington Monument looks like a tee stuck in a golf green in there. Plus the buildings nearby don't resemble some Middle Eastern hovel.

(Yes, this is Jugnle Strike; that might be the one I have.)

ShiryuGL's Desert Strike video has a comment I liked:
Well a game can shine like the nob to a whore house, doesn't make the gameplay as great as what nes, snes and sega layed down.
