MAME problems

Post by Arvandor »

So... We got a new computer at work, and now when I stick my thumbdrive in for some MAMEage, it tries to tate the screen, and I can't figure out how to make it stop. Anyone know what could be wrong? I've messed with the rotation settings to no avail.

Edit: Also, I'm running WolfMAME99, if that helps any. And while screwing around with things, I selected full screen, which has made the menu at the top disappear, and now I can't seem to bring it back. I can access default game options with alt+enter... but all the other menus are dead to me >_<

I remember there used to be a lot of posts on the official MAME board (before it disappeared) where this would happen to people with Intel GMA integrated graphics, and that it was a driver related problem. I don't recall what the solution was though, if there even was any.

I can run it in windowed mode just fine, if anything.

Still don't know how to get my menus back though =/

I'm not really familiar with wolfmame but can you go into the config file and turn off full-screen to get the menus back? Or maybe a command line switch, or settings in the registry?

Yes, this was a common problem for a lot of business-class PCs.

The problem was with the way the Intel drivers handled certain calls. All I can suggest is trying to switch between DirectDraw and Direct3D to see if either one makes the problem go away. Also, upgrade your video drivers to the latest ones on Intel's website (don't use the OEM drivers provided by your PC/mobo manufacturer, which tend to be out of date).

I don't know if I can screw with the registry on the computer at work. The commandline version doesn't seem to load (I double click on it, a window appears and instantly disappears), and... I guess I'll have to hunt down the config file =)

Edit: Well, the only config files I've been able to find don't have the option I'm looking to reset to 0. Or it's just not named as obviously as it is in its actual menu =/

Edit2: I'll try messing with the DirectDraw/3D options. Updating video drivers wouldn't be an option unless I can convince someone with an admin password that it needs to be done =P

Edit again for the second time: Turning on Direct 3D worked. Thanks evlis! No more playing in windowed mode, which was more annoying than I thought it would be. Such a smaller view field really sucks.

Oh great, and now whenever I try to load a ROM, it just kind of... Doesn't load up. That's really bizarre. I wonder if an admin somehow locked it out? o_O

Weird, no MAME ROMs work anymore, nor Big Bang Beat, but MegaMari, Cave Story, Blue Wish Resurrection, and Cho Ren Sha 68k all still work.

Edit: Aha, I think it's because Direct3D has been brokened. Anyone know how I can fix it? Or find out exactly what's wrong with it?

I even tried getting tricky, and DELETED the mame.ini file so that it would force it to create another and... theoretically reset to defaults, and that didn't even work. Can anyone help? I can't watch replays while it's like this.

Did you run DXDiag and have it tell you it's borked? I know a way to force a reinstallation of DirectX, but it's a bad idea in almost every case.

What you probably should do is reinstall the operating system..barring that, get a new computer

It's the work computer we're talking about =P I think someone came in and forcably disabled or uninstalled DirectX, and I don't have the privledges to install anything.

I've just either been running it windowed, or flipping the monitor sideways and running it tate, which doesn't get the weird stretchy effect of playing it yoko, obviously.

Then probably I am helping you get fired.

Okay, let's work on that then.

Can you put the DirectX redistributable on your thumbdrive?

Also, isn't DirectX sorta necessary for Windows to work? Should be the case in XP, and certainly is for Vista.

I'd actually thought of sticking it on my thumbdrive, but... I haven't bothered trying.

If it's neeed to run windows, then they just disabled Direct3D or whatever. I had MAME running using that so that it wouldn't stretch, then one day there was an admin loggin where my cooworkers loggin would be (it saves the loggin name), and I couldn't get any of the ROMs to run. Shutting off the direct3d option fixed it. Big Bang Beat also no longer ran, and the windows dvd player no longer works (but MPC on the flashdrive does -_^)
