Virtua Stick High Grade with PC Games?

Having only just entered the world of PC gaming (MAME and Touhou games mainly), I'm having issues with configuring the directional joystick on the High Grade. It works perfectly well with MAME, showing up as "Joy 1 Hat Switch U, D, etc", but when I try and configure the stick for lever use in any of the Touhou games or Streets of Rage Remake, it doesn't respond at all. The buttons can be configured, but nothing from the stick. The stick shows up perfectly well through the Windows configuration interface, so I really don't know what the deal is here.

What joysticks do people here use for doujin games? Is this a problem with the High Grade? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

some games only use the "normal" joystick directions and not the directions from an hat switch. you may check for xpadder or joy2key. these programs map the switches from the stick to keyboard keys an now you can use them in those games.
