I thought we were voting for "why did you pick some crappy game oh it's because you aren't EXPERIENCED ENOUGH."

Is it obvious I don't like the crap in the voting thread about being experienced?

I have to admit I've never played this game, but the review on the shmups homepage is a little retarded.
It's got a '9' score, but it reads like it should be a 5.

If I'd never headed into the forum and only read that review, I wouldn't have bothered trying to play it!

A shmup knowledge test would be nice in order to vote in the top 25. This way we would be sure no bots and/or trained monkeys are voting  .

Nexzr would be somewhere between 35th-40th in my top 50 list. Nice game, but there's so many great shmups out there.

The review on shmups.com is embarrassing. It's SO annoying that Malc doesn't update the site anymore! There are several bad reviews containing incorrect information on shmups.com. Those reviews should rather be deleted than be shown to thousands of people seeking knowledge.
Since Malc refuses to hand it over to someone who actually cares, sometimes I wish he would rather shut down the site than leave it in this zombie-state. Basically not updating shmups.com in 5 YEARS is a major disservice to the shmupping community (yes, Malc managed to put up 4 (!) reviews in the past 5 years). It's cool that he got it all started, but there's really no excuse for the way it is now. Sorry Malc, but you fail. Props to Bloodflowers for the forum!

and all that other crap.

totally not cool to speak about malc that way. happen to know what a cool guy he is (even with the little contact i had with him way back when), and this is no way to talk about the man, especially since he's too busy with LIFE to update our reviews.

edit: i stand by what i say in general, but i call truce with Ceph (it was a long battle, but i feel we have at last found some common ground to stand on). i imagine for a heated moment, i just couldn't get the "shmups.com" fight song out of my head, and over-reacted as a result.

sincerely

The shmups.com review is pretty laughably bad.

I mean, if you actually read it:
"Here’s the number one stand out problem that someone should have caught before this game left the development room: no secondary weapon. Yep…just your shot button in this game. "

OK, so the number one problem with the game is that it doesn't have a secondary weapon? Whoever wrote this review must really have a hard time with the genre then, because A LOT of shmups don't have secondary weapons. In fact, I would think the fact that THIS is the primary problem someone found with Nexzr would indicate that Nexzr must be a near flawless game.

And then there's nothing else in the review. The majority of the review is the guy bitching about the lack of a secondary weapon.

I think malc has a responsibility. It's like he started a zoo and now he's no longer feeding the animals (for whatever reason), and he refuses to let anyone else do it.
Since "shmups" has become something like the official term for 2D scrolling shooters, leaving the most well known internet resource in hibernation is bad, especially since our favorite genre has become an ever smaller niche during the past years.

Ceph may be lacking in tact, but not in truthful information. The stagnant state of the main site truly is a pity.

I think it'd be awesome if the site were co-run by 4-5 different people with differeing views on shmups who were willing to actively contribute content, information, and reviews. But alas, tis only a dream.

An apt analogy I feel. At what point does a person realize that he just don't want to run the zoo any longer, even though he had great success running it before, he still owns the zoo, and still very much loves the animals?

Honestly, the move towards forums, wikis, and RSS feeds has been so great (among both webmasters and users) in the last few years that gaming sites having constantly updated web pages filled with pretty pictures are threatening on extinction (is HG101 the only one left?). I appreciate the state of nostalgia that Malc's kept this site in but it's a shame Shmups can't carry on the torch.

If Nexzr makes it to the top 25 (or better yet, the top 10!) that would be so damn awesome.

If anything does it it will be this. As generally I just see the Top 25 as "Top 25 Shmups Most Accessible to People".
Nah, it's the Top 25 among the most accessible. It's not that bad :) .

Nexzr is just one of those games that I gotta take someone elses word on for now, besides the difficulty in getting a copy... even my best googling turns up nothing. In fact 80% of the PCE games I want to try are outside of my grasp in every possible way. Legal and otherwise it seems.

These kind of issues prevent me from voting in this competition at all. If my shmup knowledge was deep enough to get into this, I'd lose my job/wife/dog/sanity, but it'd be a fun ride.

Not that I'm endorsing piracy, but please allow me to say: LOL, are you serious?

The legal way: Click here.

Anyway, just take my word for it and vote for it. The seven people who already voted for Nexzr can't all be wrong. ;)
