I've owned both, and I thought they were both very good for what they are.

I thought the buttons on the Hori stick were complete shit, the stick wasn't bad though.

I have the Fighting Stick SS with box if you want to buy it..

Personally I like the look of the virtua stick, but the stick wasn't very good, it was loose and wobbly, but still too stiff when trying to trigger the switches in each direction, which resulted in a very "crunchy" feeling. I ended up drilling holes in the metal panel and getting a LS-32 in there.

The stick on the FS SS is better in comparison, I'd say it feels like any hori stick, the lightweight responsive feeling, the joystick overall doesn't seem very mod friendly though.

I have the Japanese version of the Hori FSSS (it has a metal top and bottom plate).

The stock stick is good for shoot-em-ups; short throw, strongish resistance, smallish deadzone and has Omron microswitches (without any levers).

You can make the deadzone even smaller by modding it with appropriate microswitches with short levers (as shown above). The microswitches would need sufficient resistance (not to 'stick' to a particular direction because they would be mounted very close to each other) and the same, rounded case design to drop into the joystick chassis (which has recesses to house them). It then becomes as 'tight', if not tighter than a Seimitsu LS40...

The stock buttons are more than adequate for shoot-em-ups. The microsiwtches are not that dissimilar to stock Sanwas. However, the buttons are not as sensitive, i.e. you need to press them a bit further to engage them and they have a more 'bouncy' feel to them. You need to depress them half-way before they engage; a good or bad thing depending on your preference. Personally, I can rest my fingers on them without accidentally engaging them like I do with Sanwas...
