Nexzr Deserves to be Among the Top 25 This Year!

Post by Ceph »

It really is that good. It saddens me how few people have played this rare PC Engine gem from 1992.

(Topic inspired by this.)

We tried this last year, and I also gave Nexzr a vote, but it still didn't make the Top 25.

It had its chance, this year I'm voting for something else.

Don't give up. There are already 5 votes for the game. Seems more people know about it now than a year ago (still too few, though).

What, so now everyone's gonna make a "vote for this game plz" thread?

If so, I foresee a Homura thread on the next few minutes. :3

...and Nexzr is one of the few games someone voted for that I never played. Shame on me.

I'm surprised it isn't a more frequently bootlegged game, to be honest. It rocks hard. And carnival mode is sweeeeeet on the summer carnival version.

couldn't sell you a copy, but i could always give you a website!

oh god, i've become so lame lately. i went on a rom binge recently, and this game found itself within the path of destruction.

that being said, this game is fantastic. i feel ridiculous for not approaching it sooner. Sylphia was another absolute surprise! :D
I have no sig whatsoever.

I check ebay regularly for the game. I'm confident I'll get it within the year, and if it proves to be great enough, I might vote for it next time. :)

I think I've voted for Nexzr the past 3 or 4 years.

But yeah, Nexzr should definitely be on the list, since it is the best shmup on the PC-Engine and all that.

Edit:
Well, I can't see the voting thread from 3 years ago, but I did vote for Nexzr the past two years. :)

I need to play Rayxanber III soon too... I'm sure that'd make my list as well since I dug Rayxanber II alright.

Better yet, someone sell me a pce-cd or turbo duo (NEW)... :(

getting NEXZR is easy, getting one of those isn't.

oh and I'd rather support RECCA or Star Soldier GC/PS2 for outsiders for the top 25.

Recca certainly also belongs on the top 25 list. But Star Soldier PS2?! No way.

Why are you looking for a new Duo? You'd better get a Duo-R or RX. There seem to be a number of Duos with bad capacitors (which leads to audio problems). And does it have to be new?

Well it makes my top 25 "ever played" (GC version btw), simply because it takes one of the best shmup game concepts and expands on it with great graphics, superb music, caravan modes and lots of great extras (like movies of old commercials etc.).
That and it just plays SOO well.
Give me this over Dodonpachi (well the console versions anyway) anyday.

Well not necessarily for a Duo, but any PCE system being able to play the cd games.
And does it have to be new?
Yes! As mentioned before I am suffering because of OCD, therefore NEW is almost a must. (I've bought used before but ended up not "being able to" play afterwards). It just doesn't feel right for me when playing on something of which I don't know "where it's been" before...
Yes I am pathetic...

This would be cool if people included some kind of argument to convince people.
It really is that good.
I'm not convinced.

If a game is good then people will vote for it. The top 25 is to guage public opinion, it's not a contest.

Ceph claims few people have played it, so they wouldn't know if it is good or not.

Isn't it nice that most of the good games are recent titles available in MAME? ;)

If people want to convince other people that a game is awesome, bring it. The pressure's on now.

Here's a review of Nexzr (not by me), in case you've never heard of the game before: http://www.illusionware.it/pc-engine/nexzr.htm

Unfortunately most videos of Nexzr on youtube are running at the wrong speed; here's one that was filmed off the screen (looks ugly but is running at the right speed): http://youtube.com/watch?v=sw4FSRFzagw

Here's stage 1 in "hideeze" mode (awful difficulty), correct speed: http://youtube.com/watch?v=hA_VSJWofSs

Since this was played using an emulator, either something was wrong with the player's input device, or he was cheating and actually played the game in slow motion (looking at how well he avoids the shots, this seems likely).

It doesn't normally do that.

Flame me, but in a top 25 that is basically lacking anything Compile, Toaplan, and stuff like Galaga, Salamander and other true landmark titles... Well, I don't really think Recca nor Nexzr should enter it. Too many priorities.

Have a look at this list:

Axelay
Blazing Lazers / Gunhed
Dimahoo / Great Mahou Daisakusen
Gaiares
Galaga
Gate of Thunder
Giga Wing 2
Gradius II
R-Type Final
Raiden
Raiden II
Salamander (FC) / Life Force (NES)
Soldier Blade
Strikers 1945
Super Aleste / Space Megaforce
Zanac Neo
Zero Gunner 2

Top quality stuff, aren't they? Well, they are shmups which were dropped from the Honorable Mentions last year. Now don't get picky - don't jump at me saying that Nexzr and Recca are better than this or that one. I'm perfectly aware. But I guess my point is clear anyway.

edit= of course, to open a topic to promote a fine game is something commendable to do, so please don't be put off by my two cents. I too tried to gather consensus around Salamander and cute'em ups in the past. :)

While those games aren't all bad, I think both Nexzr and Recca are superior to each one of them.

We are not voting for landmark titles. We are voting for personal favourites. This is the reason neither Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga or most Cave games will ever appear in my lists, though I of course recognize they are good games and have influenced the genre in many ways.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Of course. In fact, all I wrote was meant to explain my stance on my top 25, and not anyone else's.

Anyway, PCE/DUO is absent from the top 25 since 2002. It it makes a comeback, thanks to Virtual Console or thanks to a renewed enthusiasm for Nexzr, I'll be very happy. :)

If anything does it it will be this. As generally I just see the Top 25 as "Top 25 Shmups Most Accessible to People".
