Anyone ever play through Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe's Brother?

Post by Hulkcore »

So because I like torture, I decided to play through this game. Ended up with cheats because I got tired of restarting five minutes back every time an AA tank showed up...anyway... the point is...

Revenge Joe? How about Revelations Joe? :D

(Yeah, I know that's not what the title intends to say.)

I wonder why "terrorism" is guilty when "the devil" sent it to earth...shouldn't we go fight the devil next?

Naah, Joe's brother is revenged.

Yeah, I think the fact that this game has a sequel tends to contradict what it claims about eternal peace and such...

That's not entirely true; I have always felt all terrorism is is just a small country fighting a world power. Just like pedophiles. All they are are people who like other people somewhat younger than them.

Oh I plan to. I can only hope it's as rewarding as finishing the first one.

Twin Eagle 2, in my opinion after playing through both, is infinitely more playable than the first. Lets compare:

Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe's Brother.
-shooting/bombing mechanic
-no noticeable scoring system
-1 long level
-no bosses
-when you continue, you start at the beginning of the last section and must replay the last 3-4 minutes again.
-AA missiles that target you for 30 seconds that can't be shot down
-great-ish ending sequence when you finish
-only two songs for the entire game
-horse whinny sound effect whenever you pick up an item
-flickering half visible bullets from 1/3 of the enemies
-1 type of bomb

Twin Eagle 2: The Rescue Mission
-shooting/bombing mechanic
-scoring system, something to do with killing enemies in rapid succession
-3 stages with 3 levels apiece
-boss battles at the end of every level
-weird rotated aiming mode at the last boss of every stage
-when you continue you start from where you died
-AA missiles that don't target you...makes sense...still can't be shot down
-really mediocre ending sequence
-didn't keep track of the songs, but not many more than the first game
-really great dialog when you do things, i.e. when you die, "I'm hit, I'm hit, I'm coming apart!"
-visible bullets
-3 types of bombs
-great boss warning screen (see below)

Anyway, the end sequence of 2 went by too fast and is kinda messed up, so I wasn't able to screenshot it. It wasn't as interesting anyway. The boss warning screen is great though...

I've finished both Twin Eagle games aboout year ago.

The big problems with the first is the unbalanced power up system(you get way too strong with full power ups),the lack of bosses and the long boring levels. It has really nice graphics for 1988 if you play on a tated TV and the gameplay is alot like kyukyoku tiger (twin cobra).

The big problems with the second is the broken "special moves" system(it has about 5 special moves done using some kind of street fighter style commands and when your bar is empty an item that fills your "special move bar" gets dropped) :the flares are just so strong its not even funny, it acts as a shield and it also destroys everything in seconds (including bosses), also the sprite for the players copters are so goddamn ugly its not even funny and the bosses are repetitive as hell. It has nice touches here and the the graphics are some nice pre-rendered crap that look pretty good on a tated TV.

overall both games feel like they could have been good but fail badly in some areas.

I like the absolute destructibility of the environment in both games, but mainly the second. There are actually some cool animations and stuff when you blow up some things in the background.

I actually liked a lot Twin Eagle, together with Twin Formation/Thunder Cade. it is the kind of cheesy shmup that Seta and similar companies produced during the '80s, mostly focused on sketching some ideas (rendered graphics, specific weapon system) without focusing on development and balance.

I would say, in retrospective, that most of the then-enjoyment was to battle past the poor balance and completing the game to kill time. Oh, and the butt rock!
"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

I.M. Banks, "Consider Phlebas" (1988: 43).

I loved Twin Eagle.

I used to play this game a little bit, in a restaurant called
The Ground Round, before it was closed down to make room
for a Saturn car dealership, in Glenview, IL (a Chicago suburb)
on Waukegan Rd back in late '89 / early '90.
They had Altered Beast, P.O.W., TMNT, and Twin Eagle. This was
my favorite place to play arcade games, because they had 1 of my
favorite games (Altered Beast) and it was within walking distance of
home. I got my parents to take us out to eat just so I could play!

I loved the bonus stages, shooting down Mig-29s and Mig-23s.
The rock song that played, what the hell was that?
What were the lyrics? It sounded like
"wah wah wah, gonna take it downnnnnn"
or "gonna bomb a town".

I was just about to make a thread asking about the words to
that butt rock song, but i used the search function and saw this
thread had been made only just a few weeks back, that's some
funny shit, I almost lol'd.

Anyway, the best thing about Twin Eagle is, not the gameplay,
not the graphics, and not even the memorable cheesy-ass MUSIC,
but the great memories I have of it.

WAH WAH WAH !!!!!!!!!! GONNA BOMB A TOWNNNNNNNNNNNN

At the 2007 California Extreme show, somebody brought in a Twin Eagle dedicated cabinet and it was for sale at $250.00 USD...plus the fact that it was set on Free Play. I recall playing this bad boy back in the late 1980's... ^_~

It brought a sense of wonderful nostalgia for me -- the 1980's was a cool time for arcades back in the day..... ^_~

This was enough to turn me from a lurker to a registered user. I've played through Revenge Joes Brother a few times. Had one in a converted Zaxxon cab in my garage. Classic garage beater cab. I sold it to a buddy and now have a nicer JAMMA cab with a 25" monitor in its place.

Not a great game, but very fun. I think it might be easier on dedicated hardware then on MAME due to slowdown on the "real" hardware.

BTW, here is what that dead Tekken became... 27" vert flat screen with Suzo inductives for vert shooters. It now has a Sky Soldiers marquee to match the side art, and I fixed the light leak at the speakers. :o

The only thing I found particularly hard about it was the AA tanks that shoot homing missiles. It's ridiculous how long those things keep after you + not being able to shoot them down.
