Lets be honest now, the NES is so old and the games are not exactly eye catching.Alright, there may be the beginnings of some great games but ...come on...

Did you expect me to list every console ever made?

As far as i know the PS1 and 2 are the biggest selling consoles of all time,no-one voting for the PS1?

Alien Syndrome
Bomberman 2
Contra
Don Doko Don 2
River city Ransom
Ice Hockey
Little Samson
Metal Storm
Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu
Downtown Special - Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou!

ALL of those games are pure fucking gold, and a good reason to get an NES (except RCR, which is better on PCE). Stellar graphics aren't necessary for a fun game, this is a basic fact >_<

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo > Soul Calibur 2. That is all.

If i saw an xbox cheap I'd recommend you get it, its not worth all the cash at the moment, £50 is about all i'd pay for one, bloodflowers is right about online gaming on it though, still think dreamcast pso was online perfection.

Dreamcast all the way for me! Best shmups imo then saturn closely behind.

Well If this is true, then since the NES, Master System, Genesis and SNES emulators already run flawlessly, I hardly see much competition for xbox when it comes to shmups. The only shmups the xbox would seriously be lacking, would be the modern/recent shmups. But the volume of older shmups compared to the newer ones is terribly higher, you'd be more than satisfied.

I'm looking to mod my Xbox soon, mainly for the Neo Geo and Turbo Duo emulators. I was wondering if there were any roms that didn't work 100%. Do they all work perfectly, or are there some holes here n there?

Not to mention that you left out the Castlevania's, Contra 2, as well as MANY great racing titles.

Wow, you beat me to the punch (though perhaps for different reasons.)

This is perhaps the most off-topic thread ever.

Well, to keep with the Xbox topic, I think it depends on what you want to play. Out of the trifecta, the Xbox has the least amount of titles I want for it, and own for it. But the GC's meager lifespan may fix that.

But yes, the thread digressed quickly into a tangent of whinning about how the Fairchild Channel F is absent from the poll.

hell, it would have been better without the poll...but I loves my Genny.
And my old Fred-Savage movies.

From what I've seen so far with a standard modded Xbox, early arcade games like Golden axe, streetfighter 2 turbo and Gradius III will run fine. But the later arcade games that take more memory (Streetfighter Alpha, ESP RA.DE, King of fighters 96, etc) will not work unless you increase the Ram/Harddrive space of the Xbox.

So as I'm sure you can imagine, most Neo Geo games will not work without the extra memory. I hear that with the extra space "almost all" the roms in MAME and Neo Geo run smoothly, but I'll have to see it to know for sure.

I dunno about the Turbo duo emulator, you might have to search the net for people who've used it to get more info.
I've already seen a normal modded Xbox handle some GBA, PSX and N64 emulators, so I wouldn't at all be surprised if it also has a good Turbo Duo emulator.

Sure beats the 'feel' of PC emulation though, right guys?

I believe Xbox has a port of Hugo for its PC Engine emu, so it's certainly not perfect, judging by the PC port.

Witho nly 3 shmups for it... I don't think so.
By the way, what's Xyanide on X-BOX?
Horizontal or Vertical Shooter?

I can't tell from the screen shots:

Its also fro GBA & NGAGE

On the GBA its looks cool, even though I've never heard of this before:

Xynide on Xbox is a more Smash-TV esque game, but you do still fly a ship through twisted corridors.

There are gameplay vids on the official site, the link to which I forgot.
Last I heard (in march 05), they still plan on releaseing it.

Judging from the vids, you control a starfighter with a turret against a large flowing FMV-esque backdrop while enemies approach from several directions in traditional shmup patterns.

So far I see it as a fusion of SmashTV, gradius, and DeathStar Destructo

So the verdict appear to be get one if it's cheap and get MAME etc running on it,along with it's 3 shmups.

Otherwise-don't bother, it's not a better choice than a PS2,GC,DC and PC that i've already got.

The xbox is a very worthwhile purchase but I wouldn't buy it for its shmups. You should go with a japanese ps2, dreamcast, or better yet...a saturn.

Saturn?
And look for recommended games that are not available?
Whats the point?

I don't get pleasure in seeking out games that are recommended by people and are as rare as rocking horse shat(over priced as well) or are Jap only market.
If a game is VERY rare, it does'nt make it better than an easily obtained game from a newer console.

I've already got (PAL)PS2,GC,DC,PC. The only other one i'm considering is Xbox. I've gone through the 'rose tinted glasses' stage and have realised that buying older consoles is a waste of time and full of disappointments. :(

No disrespect to any die hard's out there, but getting older consoles is not for me anymore.

I'm still very much into the Genesis shmup scene and I hardly think it's a waste of time. The games are not that rare and 20 bucks for a good shmup is not so unreasonable. Not every shmup you buy has to be a Radiant Silvergun or Sapphire.

I have just looked for Saturn games, Salamander- good game- at the moment it's on £31. That's what $60, not very good value if you ask me.

$20= £10, not a chance of getting decent shmups for that amount on Saturn over here.

Salamander 2 looks real good, not sure how it is though.
Where are you finding those cheap prices man?

Well I just had mine chipped, no memory or HD upgrades, and it's running the all the above if not perfectly, to a point where I can't tell the difference!

Maybe it depends on the emulator, but I'm using Final Burn for Cave/CapCom/Neo stuff, and Mame OX for everything else, and it beats the hell out of PC emulation.

Not exactly his fault if he can't get into older consoles. :?
Don't make his problem any worse

As long as the gameplay is entertaining, I can game with whatever gen console I please. Even if it's a stinker, it won't bother me because it's only a $4-$12 loss.

But if it's not for you that's fine. . .
just don't openly piss-away an entire generation in front of its most rabid fans.

If decent Saturn games were costing you  $60+ EACH:shock: then you would'nt see it as such a good prospect. You would not be seeing it as pissing away blah blah.

This evening i saw a deal for both Steel Dragon EX AND Gunbird SE for £15 on PS2.

I think that money would be better spent on the 2 brand new PS2 games for half the price of a 2nd hand Saturn game.

perhaps, but if a game is really good, like say Salamander, than the price is totally worth it, and i bought mine for $35-$40, so you can get it for cheaper than $60.

as far as the 'rose tinted glasses' comment goes, wow. great gameplay has absolutely nothing to do with the color of my glasses.

i know my opinion doesn't matter to you, but i couldn't help but get involved, because that is ridiculous.

But i can get BRAND NEW shmups for PS2 etc for less than half the price of older 2nd hand shmups for older consoles in the UK.

It just does'nt make sense to get the Saturn stuff.

It might be different where you are but in the UK, sought after games for older consoles can cost you a small fortune. :?

Tomorrow i'm gonna get Steel Dragon EX AND Gunbird SE for £15 brand newon PS2.Now that's a bargain.

You can't honestly think that i'd be better off getting a Saturn game for double the cost of 2 new PS2 games?????? :?:
