Not a shmup as such, so moved to OT.

According to this, you destroy waves of enemies with fireworks, trying to chain explosions together. If you allow EEE, I don't see why this won't fit.

There's a demo of the game on the Nintendo Channel this week. IMO, it is a shmup, though a rather unique one. Everything is done with the stylus. Shots can be fired from anywhere on screen via short motions with the stylus. If they miss, they explode into bullets that need to be avoided. Movement is also done with the stylus and the "ship" is this diamond thing (that looks different depending on the levels).
The game is action rather than puzzle based and waves of enemies to shoot down appear on screen. The goal of the levels is to collect stars that drop from the enemies after they are defeated. Once the bar is filled, the level is complete. The game also has bullet patterns that are often fired from the enemies.
I like what I tried of the demo, though I would have preferred to shoot while moving. The game has an experimental fell to it, which I like. I also like how the demo comes with free homing missiles.

I'd say this is definitely a shmup. It takes a while to get used to not being able to move and shoot at the same time (and, incidentally, the way you can fire bullets from anywhere rather than just near your ship).
The demo is a lot of fun and I'm definitely going to be picking this up, as it will only be $20.
One thing I do wonder is how the scoring will work. There didn't seem to be any sort of scoring whatsoever in the demo.

bVork it up!
I just saw some vids of this, it's most definitely a shmup. I suggest this topic get moved.
Also has anyone tried it yet? Does it have a scoring system? The bullet patterns look fun, although it seems annoying that you can't shoot and move at the same time.

"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
The people have spoken.

OOOOhhhh!!!Playing this now and it's fun fun fun with a capital PH.
Touchscreen only and you fire missiles from anywhere on the screen and just move your ship to pick up falling stars and avoid debris.Only get one life mind-if your ship is hit then it's game over
Flicking away with that stylus makes me feel like I'm in a DS advert

It's finally available for purchase!
Review here http://www.destructoid.com/destructoid- ... 0040.phtml
I ordered it for 25 canadian earthbucks, a much better deal than the 35USD play-asia wants. They don't even have it in stock and should be ashamed.

Just picked up Big Bang Mini and also really enjoying it--super addicting gameplay. It is not at first very challenging, but there's lots of options and since the controls are unusual, it is good that they aren't just tossing tons of crazy shit at you right away.
I think for some the build in difficulty might be too slow, but I guess once you have beaten through the earlier levels there's nothing forcing you to play them again.
So yeah, my thoughts right now is that while this is a long way from a perfect shooter, it is one helluva lot of fun.

Today, dated 2/6/2009, went down to my local Best Buy store to see if they had gotten any copies of Big Bang Mini and they had only two copies ripe for the taking. So naturally, I scooped up just one for my DS gaming collection. ^_~
I like how Ignition Entertainment really went out on a limb to include lenticular animation effects for the DS gamebox slipcase jacket...it has a total of five frames of very cool & colorful fireworks exploding type of animation. Really impressive and eye-catchy, especially for a DS game. It retails for a mere $19.99 USD at Best Buys across the USA. Better grab a copy while it's still available for now. ^_~
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
