I'm playing on a 58" 1080p display using the following in game settings:

Speed: 54FPS (True)
overscan: 640x480 dot by dot

Everything else is default. No flickering here...looks pretty good however, I'm not sure if this is the truest setting as I've not spent much time with the fighters part of the series (and also don't know what some of these options mean :) ).

Is the "Onslaught" DVD that comes with Aces the same exact DVD that came with the original INH Onslaught package? Wasn't there also an omake disc released sometime after the original superplay package?

INH page
Of course those with the previous edition have the soundtracks, which are not bundled with the new one. Moreover the running time is shorter, 180 vs 225 min.

it's going to be locked... I really wouldn't get my hopes up at all.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

My copy just shipped from Play-Asia.

...not going to bother testing this on a PAL console though. Someone on GameFAQs mentioned it was region locked - I'll go with that.

looks like it is time to buy a jp console then. between this, Ketsui, and DOJ Black, seems like a good time.

too bad the releases caught me on vacation though. i'd have preferred to pre-order them and be done with it, but alas no money until i get back up north and back to work...

any suggestions on the bare minimum to get up and started. looks like the arcade bundle on play-asia would cost around $400 after shipping (approximately). any other suggestions, concerns?

edit: also anyone know if the cables are all-region compatible? i'd hate to have to import a VGA cable...
I have no sig whatsoever.

They are. As are controllers, memory cards and even harddrives.

the cheapest solution would be the XBOX 360 ARCADE (NTSC-J) Package. This doesn't have a HDD included but can you take your old HDD an plug it in the japanese console and play with your US/EUR Gamertag on it ? Is the region protection just based on the console and not on the country specified in your gamertag?

If you have purchased arcade games in your region and then take your HDD and use it on a Japanese console, you'll have to buy your arcade games again.

Boy, there seems to be quite a lot of FUD flying around the topic of importing a 360. Let's see if I can help clear things up. I'm speaking from experience, since I had a US Premium 360 since day one, which I later replaced it with a JP Core.

First, your US/EU XBLA account will work just fine if you move your HDD to a new import unit. The catch is, if you bought XBLA games on your old 360, you were able to play the full version across all your user accounts. If you move your HDD you will only be able to play the full version using the account that bought the game, also only while connected to Live I believe. All the other sub accounts will have access to the demo version. This is also the case if you move your HDD to a replacement unit from the same territory, i.e. if you upgrade to a HDMI capable Elite.

All accessories work exactly the same, as has been stated. I added my Premium HDD, wireless controller, and cables (have cables ever been region locked?) on the JP Core without any problems. All my XBLA accounts have worked perfectly since then (although I don't play multiplayer, only browse the Marketplace), the US gold, and the silver JP account, which I've had set up on my US console, all transfered over without a hitch. The motherboard is the component that determines region. The region locked demo of Love Football (was that the name? I don't remember, that Namco soccer game) wouldn't play on the old US system, but loaded up just fine after the switchover. (Although Namco will sometimes fuck you with games that read the DVD-ROM's region in addition to the console region, Trusty Bell demo? Thank you jerks.)

The biggest catch you'll face is obviously the region lock for software. The misconception is that HK versions of games are region-free, where JP versions are locked. That's not entirely true. The HK/Asia version is usually the exact same disc as the country-of-origin version (Gears of War = US disc, Senko no Ronde = JP disc, use the Play-Asia guide). Therefore anyone hoping that the HK version of RFA will be magically region-free is setting themselves up for disappointment. You're much more likely to encounter region-free US/EU games than JP/Asia ones, so getting an import 360 really is the best option until a true region-free solution is found.

Hope that helps some of you make the right choice. I bought a JP 360 for Oneechanbara, which turned into a bit of a let down. But nowadays with all these shooting and RPG games coming out left and right, my decision is starting to look like a hell of a smart one. Who'd have thunk it, 360 = JP goodness?

By the way, the RFA demo has been re-listed on Major Nelson's blog, does that mean it's available to silver members? I can't check myself right now.

Well not me thats for certain, cheers for info BTW.

I remember talking to a friend who was working for marketing for the XBox in the uk and thinking to myself she was fighting a losing battle, as the XBox game library sucked the arse of a donkey, you can't polish a turd. But things are now def looking up for Microsoft Japan, if they release more shooters I'll def be getting one...

Not exactly a "lock", but nintendo regularly makes consoles with regional differences in the video output, such that e.g. RGB SCART cables will not work on an ntsc wii (and vice versa for svideo).

Iirc, PS2 power cables have a different shape at the point where they plug into your console. Or am I thinking of the DC? One has an '8' shape; the other is similar but with a flat edge on one end.

And thanks for the info, Lech. Interesting read.

It depends entirely on whether you use a single account on a JP console from a non-JP console.

Anyway, as predicted the game is region locked. Which is good news for me. Check out Play-Asia's page on the game if you want (I can't be assed linking right now).

I have a Japanese 360, which twe (EOJ) convinced me to buy last year.

Edit; Oh shit, totally forgot about this. There's a RFA theme now available on the Japanese marketplace, which I bought blind and is actually really good. It's 150 points. I can take a picture of someone is interested.

There's also a few avatars ("gamerpics) there too, of ships, but they've been there awhile.

Ah, this is true. Point taken.

ON TOPIC: just checked it out myself, the demo is available to silver account users.

BACK OFF-TOPIC: Also, to further confuse the issue of region locks, you may find yourself reverse-screwed when buying Japanese origin games that get US localizations. Mostly thanks to Namco. Case in point, the US version of Culdcept Saga is region locked in the US, so my JP 360 fails me, until they release an English language Asia region disc, like they did with Trusty Bell/Eternal Sonata. In that case I had to wait on the sidelines while US players got to play the game months before. In the case of Mistwalker's games (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey) on the other hand, I got to play the English language Asia versions way before the official US releases. So that's something else for you consider when making the decision.
