Nope, cant help you.icycalm wrote:Thanks for your offer, but it is very important that your Spanish is near-perfect.
It is about translating 5-6 game-related articles from a Spanish website.
By the way, I am prepared to send payment in the form of games for current-gen consoles.
I can ask for a margarita & your sisters phone # & normally Id pay you for both.
After that its all guess work. Sorry...

The website is Postback. As for the games, I haven't given any thought to it. We are not talking anything rare anyway. Just a couple of widely-available games for current-gen consoles (Japanese-only though). Stuff like Super Mario Galaxy, Shin Sangoku Musou 6, etc. all factory sealed. I'll just send a list to whoever can help me out, and he can pick a couple of them.
This is not hard work we are talking about. Each article is barely a page long. An afternoon's work, at the most. For those who are into videogames, it should be a pleasure. The games are just a sign of my appreciation towards whoever decides to help me out.

It's not so much an issue of time. Recap just doesn't believe that his English is good enough to allow him to produce faithful translations. He is a perfectionist, and if he can't be satisfied with the results of his efforts then he'd rather not do anything at all.
Now while I certainly respect that, I still think that even a merely decent translation is better than using babelfish.
Specineff: you have a PM.
Any more people willing to volunteer, please do so regardless.

You do realize that you're trying to translate pretty hard stuff, right? I'd dig in (for free, since I'd have no use for next gen games) but it'd take a while and I'm busy as hell at the moment.Specineff wrote:Just post and I can help you translate. (Don't want to speak for you, UFO, of course.)

I'm with you... which is why I finally bit the bullet and decided to blog and mini-review in Japanese as well. Sure, there's parts that are absolutely fucked, but if I only read stuff on the internet that was 100% grammatically correct...or even written in native English, I'd be missing out on tons of stuff. Most programming tutorials and essays I've read were written by the speaker of some obscure European language or miscellaneous Indian dialect.icycalm wrote:It's not so much an issue of time. Besides, gamengai is really more about a foreigner in Japan's look at those games and some ramblings about lifestyle. When I talk to Japnaese people, of course it's not native, so why should I worry if my writing is the same?

Yeah, the thing is that it's Spain's spanish, and it's quite redundant in some aspects, unlike latin spanish which is easier to translate from. Close translation would make it sound like it was put through Altavista. Of course, since English a somewhat practical language, I may be able to transfer the original concept without having to use word-by-word translation. I've sent Icy a sample of what I mean, and depending on what he says, I'll start tomorrow during my breaks at work.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:You do realize that you're trying to translate pretty hard stuff, right? Translator, traitor.

EDIT: Oh crap. Recap wrote this? If push comes to shove, I may end up having to kill him in self-defense. I'll still translate, just explaining to the mods one of the possible outcomes.

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Specineff just sent me the first article, and from what I can tell he did a great job. I've sent him the second now, which is quite a bit longer, so we'll see how long he'll last.
The thing is, if this whole thing goes smoothly, I will eventually want to translate Recap's whole site. Apart from the 5-6 articles that I hope Specineff will take care of, there's like a couple dozen reviews up there (many of them two pages long), and about 2-3 times a year Recap adds another half a dozen. So there will be work to go around.
I'll keep your offer in mind then, if things go smoothly.

*scratchs head* Ceph's excuse for... not translating pages from a language he doesn't speak? For posting in poor English, when you quote him using good English? You really need to think before typing, buddy.icycalm wrote:His native language is not English, so at least he has an excuse. What's yours?Ceph wrote:No, the hilarious part is that I always suspected that Recap needed someone to translate for him.
Here, I'll put up some insults that actually insult the other guy. Feel free to reuse any you want. They're arranged in order of increasing cleverness.
I always suspected that you were a homosexual.Ceph wrote:No, the hilarious part is that I always suspected that Recap needed someone to translate for him.
At least his mom isn't fat like your fat mom.Ceph wrote:No, the hilarious part is that I always suspected that Recap needed someone to translate for him.
You suck.Ceph wrote:No, the hilarious part is that I always suspected that Recap needed someone to translate for him.
Here, child. Let me break this down for you to manageable chunks.
And you know what. So do you.
The difference is that no amount of translating will make yours or Ceph's nonsense worth reading.
Now fuck off, moron.
Here Ceph is trying to make fun of a Spanish person for not having a perfect command of the English language.Ceph wrote:No, the hilarious part is that I always suspected that Recap needed someone to translate for him.
Here I am making fun of Ceph's English, by implying that he also needs a translator.icycalm wrote: His native language is not English, so at least he has an excuse. What's yours?

Also, just to clarify.Specineff wrote:*Raises hands, innocently* I'm doing it out of love for gaming, man. Don't blame the messenger.Ceph wrote:@ Specineff
So you are Recap's official translator now? That's pretty hilarious.
The message in each case is whatever is written in each of Recap's articles.
The messenger is Recap.
You are just his translator, and I am just your editor.
Apparently you don't have to write anything worth reading to get personal translators eithericycalm wrote:No need to be jealous now, Ceph. One day, when you grow up and manage to write something worth reading, you'll get your own personal translators too.Ceph wrote:That's pretty hilarious.

By if I take this declaration and run with it, Henry VIII was his own messenger.icycalm wrote:The message in each case is whatever is written in each of Recap's articles.

Anyhow, I look forward to seeing this article...but I wonder, why couldn't it be translated as usual by Recap to English, with his instructions for any subtle language effects he wants to convey into English?
