Best SF2:CE Ryu stage background...

Post by FraGMarE »

I'm taking a brief respit from other graphics drawing, messing around with something here involving SF2, and i want a public opinion about something. Which one of these Ryu backgrounds do you think looks the best?

(FROM LEFT TO RIGHT)
1. Original PC-Engine version
2. Slight modification of original PC-Engine version
3. A version for the PC-Engine I made derived from the SNES version
4. Actual SNES version
5. 9-bit Kung Fu (R). Modified PC-Engine bamboo and floor with the sky from the arcade version. (Yes, the arcade version had a moon.) :)

For comparison here is a similar screen shot of the arcade version:

I like the idea of the crescent moon, but it needs to be touched up a bit. The colours are best in the SNES version (sky, wood floor).

When I was a kid I thought Ryu's stage was on a boat.

Like others said, the moon makes it look cooler.

Yeah, the moon makes the stage looks better. But it needs some work...it looks like cheetos right now.

I voted for #2, colours look best there, and the castle nicely blends with sky. Add a white-ish crescent and it will be perfect :)

What do you mean by 9-bit Kung Fu (R)?

Just a silly little phrase i made up for when i draw something nice on the PC-Engine, as the PCE uses a 9-bit global color palette. It's mainly an in-joke, but I let it out to play sometimes. :P

I don't see any bamboo in that picture

Obviously, the final one is correct...good job on that edit.

The big thing (for me) besides the sky is the color of the platform/floor...it looks washed out or too saturated in many of the pics. Perhaps #3 has the most accurate floor (I'm just throwing that out there, didn't check an original version) but I like the richer color of the #2 and #5 best.

I like the tiles on the 1-2 ones a bit more than the 3-5 ones, though (even though they're not supposed to be bamboo, but tile). Your call there really.

I think the clouds + moon could use a bit of cleaning up too...

Alright, I've posted a screenshot from the arcade version below the others so you can compare. Not only does the arcade version include the moon, but it too is very yellow in hue. Incidentally, the only home console port that included the moon in the Ryu stage was Special Champion Edition on the Genesis/Megadrive.

I actually prefer #1... the highlights on the castle match the rest of the scene better, and the darker details on its front look match the sides better. The darker palette also makes it more dramatic. I think #5 would work the best if you darkened the front of the castle and got rid of the dithering in the sky, which looks too apparent with the white/blue gradient.

I've never really thought about it before, but that really is a beautifully drawn background. The architectural elements in the foreground have so much depth to them. I never could decide if I preferred this or the WW version, though.

I vote for 5, but the sky could use a little brightening. The upper part looks a little too pitch black. OTOH, clouds stand out better than in the original PCE one, and the moon does add a lot to it.

Gen/MD SCE does seem to have a bit more background detail than the SNES one in some stages. Zangief's stage on the SNES is missing a sign that hangs on the fence in the arcade & MD versions. The guy leaning on a sign post in Chun-Li's stage doesn't move his arm in the SNES version. This is probably where part of the extra 4 Meg in the MD version has gone.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

FraGMarE- Hope you don't mind, but I did a little editing to your #5 background. The problem with the way the moon was drawn, much like the arcade game, is that it looks more like it was hit with the smudge tool in Photoshop. Part of the reason is that the yellow just looks odd, so when it's used for highlighting the clouds, it comes off as smudged looking. So, I went in, drew up the crescent moon shape, and adjusted the clouds and moon to make the two more separated, and give an example of what I think would look better.

Outside of the moon issue, and how the pagoda looks a bit too dark, #5 looks the nicest with the enhanced highlights from the moon.

Better. I can't remember but that yellow moon must've been recolored in later revisions.

What always bugged me about that moon in the arcade (or was it one fo the home versions?), was that the moon moved with the damn clouds as they drifted across the screen. I always thought that looked so horrible.

Nah, I don't mind. I kind of did something similar with the moon, but I left a slight yellowish tint to it and repixeled some areas. The GIF at the top of the page has also been updated with the tweaked moon.

Now I've also retouched the distant dojo in the background based off the arcade version. Looks a bit better in my opinion.
