I'm going to assume it's legal/bureaucratic poopy. Maybe MS Japan is much more stringent on what they let out vs what they let in (US sourced being mostly non-region locked).professor ganson wrote:What, precisely, is entering into their deliberations or even whether they are seriously debating the issue is, presumably, less clear.

Suppose it depends if anyone is interested in releasing it internationally...hirounder wrote:I kinda doubt MS Japan will allow them making it regionfree. They seem pretty strict about it.
They wouldn't be too happy if they made it region free as most people who were interested could then buy a Japanese copy months before they released it overseas...
I'm hoping the fact that the trailer appeared on the European marketplace is a good sign that it WILL be getting a release here - otherwise, why bother with the trailer?

You could always start your own publishing company and negotiate a per copy royalty instead of a license. What are Microsoft's requirements for xbla? Can't be that hard if Sierra Online backed Wanako Studio's Shoot-'Em-UP with the bad net code. I'm sure MS would move if an agreement was negotiated to address 'show stopper' errors in a reasonable period of time. If there is no Japanese xbla release than this is an additional cost that would have to be addressed by the contract. Triggerheart, which does have a Japanese release, has minor tate screen clipping issues in 4:3 and presumably all regions do as well but one month out and still no update.

I think it has alot to do with the US versions having multiple languages on one disc. They use the same plastic for different countries, like Bioshock for example. It's dependent on your systems language settings.I'm going to assume it's legal/bureaucratic poopy. Maybe MS Japan is much more stringent on what they let out vs what they let in (US sourced being mostly non-region locked).
I think there are only one kind of disc manufactured then depending on the region the plastics gets a different label and box ect. It'd cost less for them this way.
But, can't say for sure why japan wouldn't do the same.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I think the logic reason for devs/publishers leaving their games region locked is because they're hoping they can get some publishing in the West.
And if all the fans buy the Japanese versions... then obviously, a western release would be very pointless. Especially with stuff like Cave/G.Rev games.

I'm sure they notice, the problem is I'm fairly certain that's NOT what they want the XBLA platform to become. What with the upcoming opening up of content creation tools to anyone with the ability to save $100/year and the whole community driven review+sell your owns games it's clear they want XBLA to become a showcase for original games. At this point they're probably becoming sensitive to the marketplace gaining a reputation for just having a bunch of 'retro' titles.jp wrote:
This makes me angry... actually.
What the hell is wrong with MS? Did they not notice that their biggest selling titles are generally the arcade ports?
I have no idea if this is a good thing or not; I can't really argue if they provide some exposure for some good indy devs plus give them the ability to make some money for their efforts. Then again, it means we may not see some ports that would be nice to have.

If they're really worried about what XBLA is becoming compared to what they want to do with it I don't see the problem with splitting it two ways.
I'm all for original content but there's no denying there's a market for arcade ports on XBLA(seeing the top 10 typically dominated by ports confirms as such) and if this somehow led to more XBLA releases per week I see no reason to complain.
Maybe it's only temporary and it's all growing pains and whatnot but damned if it isn't annoying.
