Those acts riped off Doom did they? Never heard that or noticed it myself...

I guess he's saying the composers of Doom found inspiration in corporate pop punk/metal arena rock boybands (post-buttrock?)

Brilliant - I always hated those bands when my mates got into them, but that said I was about 15 and listening to The Kinks, so I wasn't much cooler. Back then I never imagined I'd get into heavy music...

Bingo. There's about a dozen or so songs that "borrowed" riffs from well known bands at the time. Some are questionable, others are painfully blatant (like map 25 and Alice in Chain's "Angry Chair"). You should hear the unused tracks that Romero released last year. It's like Bobby Prince had a hard on for Alice in Chains

Indeed I do...

http://rome.ro/media/doom_unreleased_music.zip

Right there are the unused tracks. Some got tweaked and used in the game, but a lot didn't. Here are the one's I recognized in that zip...

un46- Alice in Chains' "Angry Chair".
un45- "God Smack" by Alice in Chains.
un44- shares a number of similarities to "Dirt" by Alice in Chains.
un42- quite similar to "Junkhead" by Alice in Chains
un41- feels a little like "Rooster" by Alice in Chains in the beginning, but possibly only because I'd been hearing so many AiC riffs up to this point.
un32- "Outshined" by Soundgarden.
un36- I can't place this one, but it's rather familiar.
un28- "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains (wound up in the game)
un23- blatantly "Sex Type Thing" by the Stone Temple Pilots
un20- "Man in the Box" riff by Alice in Chains

And of course, here are the ones that were officially used, with comparisons...

Soundgarden or Rage? Don't make me dust off any more albums.

Ha, found another one, un19 is pretty much the riff from the first track of Facelift.

EDIT: un21-f is Dead and Bloated.

the opening of mushihime sama stage one has an uncanny reseblence to pacific state.

there are other tracks in garegga that also borrow heavily from some early kenny larkin tracks.

I honestly think that this is all coincidence, their are only so many melodies bands and video game composers can create. 40 plus years of similar instruments being used caused this.

No coincidence, no way - the Japanese have been plundering samples from popular media for years.

Remember the most utterly bloodcurdling death throe in a videogame? It's Golden Axe when you hack one of those guys down and they let out a really drawn out wail of pain.

S'ripped from fucking RAMBO! I was watching it with a mate, and I can't remember the exact bit (I think it's a forest chase where one of the police gets injured by a trap - can't really remember, you'll have to watch it), and the guy lets out this scream and my friend jumps up and stops the film. Next thing he's booting up mame on his laptop and we match the two together. A perfect copy, and a great scream!

Sega and their sneaky thievery - brilliant!

Sampling an actual sound clip and sitting down and replicating a song they like with different technology is two different things. If you compare hundred's of rock and metal songs you'll find similarities at least as apparent as the Doom to Mettalica comparison's. Now I'm not saying that a few of these aren't blatant inspired tracks, but every little melody that's sounds similar wasn't for any reason.

Everything was inspired by everything. No one goes out of their way to make a guitar and drum loop specifically based off of one song. So much music sounds so similar.

Edit:Maybe some people go out of their way to do it. But not every single two similar sounding song has this as the case. What's so hard to believe about two people just so happening to choose the same few notes for about a minute or two of their song, When hundred's of pieces of music are made every year?

In the case of the Doom games, chance has nothing to do with it. Bobby Prince copied the songs and made adjustments so they weren't exact copies (barely in some cases), and John Romero asked him to do it basically.

I've never heard of this type of sampling before, interesting.

Edit:No one in those bands got pissed? I suppose they never really noticed.

Apparently not.

Wrong assumption. The "borrowed" riffs couldn't be more obvious most of the time :o

Check out this video to hear how Dimmu Borgir plagiarized Tim Wright's music from the Amiga shmup Agony:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE6WFQR8Oik

(btw, the Amiga sounds in the video are somehow slightly distorted, it's supposed to sound crisper and better...)

Shame on Dimmu Borgir, the plagiarizers.

I know that they are obvious, but I meant they probably never played the game to hear them.

Young people in a band...overwhelming popularity of the game...and no fan wrote them a letter saying "hey they stole the idea."

PLAUSIBLE

Everybody's played DOOM, man. Where do you think drummers get their super reflexes from? (well okay that's backwards but you get the idea)

I don't think it's copied. The Salamander uses a VLM5030 to create the voices. The VLM5030 is a Pulse Code Modulation sound processor which is used to create synthesized speech.

Listening to the Britney track it just sounds like they use a computer generated voice or a vocoder to achieve the same effect.

Hah, that's funny. I actually noticed when I watched it shortly after our highscore battle. It also contains samples from Willow (the movie), which I watched only a few days later.

Check this out

U2 - Staring At The Sun (Monster Truck Remix)

Instantly recognizable small sample at the beggining but it took me some minutes to figure out where I've heard it before... It was fun trying to remember
