Is the boss's head his weakness?
And how can I avoid him in general?

I don't want to be an ass, but since someone is inevitably gonna say this it might just as well be me... 
Alien Soldier is not considered a "shmup" on this forum (it's a "run and gunner") and discussion about it can therefore only take place in the Off topic section of the forum...
As for any concrete help... sorry don't have the game and can't help you on it, but I bet at least someone here can.

But I'm a nice guy so I'll post.
Big centipede if I remember, fire bird dash through him once on the head and hes dead
if you are not at 100% health the strategy is going to involve shooting him! I recommend homing and lancer to the head stay away from the 3 way shot. any projectiles he fires reflect em collect the health get back to 100% health and firebird dash is ass. are you wanting to know how to move around him without getting hurt?try to run try to hide, break on through to the other side!

Yep, I sure will. I just logged on for the first time today and there was a Descent Freespace topic which bugs me a lot more. Alien Soldier, c'mon. Not a shmup, dude. as for the question about the game, just keep practicing. you'll get him. it took me awhile to get used to the play mechanics of this game until i was able to even beat him, too. so don't feel bad. you don't get a lot of practice during the level before him, since it lasts for about 5 seconds!
