Samurai Aces/Sengoku Ace: Only Flush/Ain is a real samurai. (I could be wrong here; and it's SamSho Syndrome) And if you get technical about it, so is Ranmaru (Gennai's little doll), though he doesn't seem like a swordsman.
Gunbird (1 and 2): Only Ash and Tavia (she's a given) has a gun of any sort.
Tengai/Sengoku Bla(e)de: Is Katana a samurai? If not, then there are no samurais, but there is a Tengai.
Sol Divide: Not even sure where the name came from. I don't remember anything relating to the sun, but I could be wrong; haven't played it in ages. And yet it was the reason I actually can stand Psikyo in the first place.
Strikers 1945: Too easy; futuristic and all that. Even Capcom tried to stick to the year it said. (19XX is 19XX, duh) Only Strikers 1999 tried to remain true to the name, and that's the Japanese title.
Space Bomber: There isn't even a bomber available in this game. Secondary shot is a grapple hook- WAIT; which is as bad as any bomber, when used right.
Dragon Blaze: I can't find anything contradictory about this at the moment.
Gunbarich: Same as Gunbird, but I have no clue what "barich" relates to.
I'm missing some, but only because I haven't played them. Do want to play those fighting games though. No, I don't play shooters for story. But if there's a story there, why not read/hear it?
I just noticed something about Psikyo. (May be incorrect)

Do you mean a bomb? You can use enemies as bombs.LGB wrote: Space Bomber: There isn't even a bomber available in this game.

Miner 2049er - you're not a miner, you're an RCMP officer; you don't actually mine for anything, but instead paint the floor a different color (Bob has paintbrushes in his shoes, apparently).
Anyway, the only Strikers game that seemed too far from the setting was the World ROMset for 1945 III, but that's known as Strikers 1999 in Japan anyway. I'm guessing this is all supposed to be in an alternate universe, so it's perhaps not totally contradictory.
FIL: And more than zero gunners. Perhaps the gunner aims to reduce the stock of enemies to zero...eh...heard worse.

can I ask why anyone cares exactly what the settings of these games were or what characters were in what game... they're shmups. If you're looking for deep characters, multi-game stories and interesting settings, you're in the wrong genre.

This is a natural response from somone who plays games to just play them. No insult intended.kengou wrote:can I ask why anyone cares exactly what the settings of these games were or what characters were in what game... they're shmups. Psikyo spent however amount of hours they did putting it there in the first place. There's no point in ignoring it outright because it's either funny or somewhat interesting. Of course, this goes for all games on the face on the planet.
