I haven't really heard much post-rock, but i'm smitten with post-metal. Mogwai has the potential for me to like it but i'd have to give it a bunch of listens to find out. They lack the electronics that 65 and to a lesser extent Mogwai utilise in their music, but I feel they've nabbed the quiet/loud dynamic far more effectively than their contemoraries.

If you're into harsher vocals and that, you should try a band called Wolves in the Throne Room, particularly their second album. They approach the genre from a more black metal perspective, which is certainly refreshing. They're pretty much the shit at the moment though, so good luck pushing past the scenesters to grab a CD...

LSD-POND (IE LSD-March and Bardo Pond) 2CD set.

There are a couple tracks I'd probably ditch in this 140+ min whopper, but the majority is of it is excellent; easily better than any of the recent output by either band. Most tracks are over 15 minutes long.

Don't get me wrong. They did actually rock. Part of it may have been that I was on the other side of a very crowded club at 1:30 A.M. Trust me, If I think a band is mediocre I'll walk out on them in a heartbeat. I know at any given moment that there are three or four other good bands playing elsewhere.

Thurston Moore (Not his solo noise stuff. With a band. And Steve Shelley. And...acoustic guitars? Amazing, often-scorching set. Sonic Youth fanboy-ness rediscovered.)

Now if I can just get the ladyfriend out of bed, I can go see that day show at Beerland with Slab City.

DUDE! Blue Cheer is the heaviest band I have ever seen in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just saw 'em a couple weeks ago and I had no idea rock could even be like that. That show totally dethroned the Nebula show I saw on their first tour as The Rockingest Show Of All Times.

Word to the wise: If Blue Cheer comes within 100 miles of you and you don't see their show you are a dipthong. Think about it.

Hmmm...what is up with Blue Cheer? Their first album was great but then I lost interest in subsequent albums--and that was in the 60's/70's. What do they sound like now?

Again, if you want heavy, that LSD POND release I mentioned is genuinely over 2 hours of heavy sludge/psych/stoner rock in the way that I'd think any blue cheer fan would appreciate, but then again, I don't have quite the reverence for Blue Cheer that others do.

Uh..well, I've only heard Vincebus Eruptum, so recording-wise, I couldn't really say. But as far as their live shows go, much the same as that first record, actually. Hell, they still do that cover of "Summertime Blues".

I know it's passe but I recently (two weeks ago) listened to some of the tracks from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band on my car stereo. It's one of those things you pick up and put down now and then.

I also checked out the Moody Blues at home again - I used to think that was pretty fun but now I really can't stand to listen to it.

So, when I want to listen to something "new" I generally check out 70s/80s rock (and some stuff from earlier/later). There's a station which gets semi-tolerable reception to my radio (103.something WKFR I think) which usually has a good selection of "classic rock" (and the Bob & Tom show which I generally can't stand; thankfully I'm not usually on the road when it's on and I'd just listen to NPR if I was).

mogwai - c.o.d.y.

Had to check it out because of the role it plays in the Ian Rankin novel I'm reading. A near-perfect soundtrack for a near-perfect detective novel (A Question of Blood).
