I think i'm in the market for a Supergun

Post by DefaultGen »

While I normally am the kind of person who will drop lots of money on something without research, i'm kind of low on funds right now so i'm doing my research! So i've got a REALLY cheap JAMMA cab, but I suck at anything technical and I wouldn't be able to do so much as turn the monitor vertically without killing myself, so i'm thinking a Supergun might suit my needs better for now (that and a Supergun is WAY more portable).

So i've seen everything from $70 Superguns that are just a bunch of wires and Neo Geo pads to $400 ones that look on fancy with custom sticks. I'm just looking for something that will play JAMMA PCBs and MVS games (how does that work?) with component-video, supports 2 players and with decent arcade sticks to play with. I can't really build anything, I might be able to do simple mods like replacing a joystick or whatever.

Does anyone have any advice? Not looking to spend more than a fully cab X.x Sorry I didn't do a search I figured if there was some definitive guide it would be stickied or something :(

Edit: Ooh, one more question. Most of the shmup PCBs sold here, what format are they in and how would I play those? Sorry for being such a noob but hopefully i'll blow $100 on some item you own one day to make up for it :)

Shmups PCB's are all jamma and work on any supergun.

Any supergun will work for your needs. Just make sure it has the outputs on it you want. (component video etc).

I'm surprised nobody here makes them on a regular basis.

First thing, Component video is only really available NeoBitz encoders and those are terrible for playing Cave shooters. You'll probably be stuck on S-Video with a JROK encoder, but that should be plenty good anyway.

MVS systems have a Jamma connector so those just plug in and go as well.

Now the bigger pain in the ass is that MVS uses stereo sound while most everything else Jamma related does not. Cave games in particular might not even output sound if you have the wiring wrong. Make sure you get a supergun that will work with both. Also on this note, Audio Attenuation = bad, make sure the supergun doesn't have this or at least you can turn it off.

A decent supergun will probably run in the 200-300$ range so be ready to spend that much.

For supergun purposes a 1 slot is fine and uses the jamma standard mono output. To use a multi slot on a supergun is just silly.

Ok i'll look for an S-Video one then. Audio Attenuation = bad, ok. What do you mean make sure I find one that will work with both? Mono and Stereo? $200-300 doesn't seem too terrible, i'll be able to scrounge that up over the next few weeks, and I have no intention of multi-slot, haha.

Also most shmup PCBs (not those $500 Cave ones) seem to hover around or less than $100. Could I get a decent lot of games for <$100 a board? Any recommendations to start out? All i've got is P-47: The Phantom Fighter and it's crappy :D

Wrong (not trying to be rude BTW) Neobitz is well suited to MVS games, and Jrok's are available with component out. Next, MVS is NOT compatible with JAMMA. The audio pinouts are different and are wired for 4 button MVS. Not a big deal, but if you fire up a MVS motherboard to a JAMMA supergun you could damage the audio circuit of the board. You can either get a JAMMA to MVS adapter (EBAY) or change the pinouts on the supergun. Hope this helps. Do yourself a favor, get a Sigma or a Dlite custom or a Matt Ross SG (harder to find)

Yeah that's why I said NeoBitz are bad for CAVE games, not MVS. Didn't know they started making JRok with Component though.

And yeah, I dunno why everyone else here keeps saying MVS sound is the same as JAMMA, it's definitely not.

Oh wow i'm already bidding on a couple MVS boards since I figured I could throw them in my cab until I got a supergun.

I'm looking for something like this?
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEO-GEO-MVS-TO-JAMM ... otohosting

I plug that into my JAMMA harness, then plug the Neo Geo board into that, then put a cart in the Neo board and i'm set? Is this only for multi-slot MVS boards or all MVS boards?

yeah thats the part you need, a Dlite gun is compatible with both MVS and Jamma because the audio is wired for both setups and can be changed via a toggle switch like my SG.

Ok :) There's actually a guy on GameTZ right now offering me a Vega Jr. for $185 and he has a bunch of PCBs and MVS games he can bundle with it cheap he says, i'm looking into that. Is that a decent SG/price combo?

Well from what i read about those SG's they are pretty good. Sort of like a Sigma Raijin. GP could really help out since i know he has owned Sigma products as well as the Raijin. He might be familiar with the SG you are talking about since it is Japanese made.

Also ask about the authenticity of those MVS carts your interseted. There are alot of boots out there in the US. I got mine from YJP and have had no problems

If i had the money, i would be trying to talk Dean into making me one of these on his site.
