I kinda of like them, but so many attempt to clone each other. Arena shmups need some new ideas... I'd like to see on with some kind of bullet curtains.

This one has some fresh ideas...and you don't even need a console to play it
more glowy fucking vector graphics - Can anyone be bothered getting an artist nowadays to draw something nice?, or at least use a new graphical approach?? boooring!

- i suppose it's played with 2 sticks as well
I guess you didn't clik on the link in the first post?
It's hard not to agree with you though. It seems that through these download-services shmups are once again becoming the favourite pastime of programmers, as opposed to artists, just like it was on the C64 and Amiga. This is the reason why most Euroshmups are rubbish.
It's more of an arena shooter mixed with a dungeon crawler though. With the expansion pack (which added 12 new levels, 3 new characters and multiplayer mode) included, Dark Mist's the best game so far on PSN imo.

Haha, better "more glowy fucking vector graphics" than another loli on a broomstick I'd say. Seriously, some people just love to pull off a one man show while others can't get enough of those glowy vectors.
Btw, just like in Grid Wars controls are highly customizable. Don't have to play with two sticks if you don't like to.
A clip of darkmist on psn if somebody is interested. Haven't played it yet, looks a little bit like a "shooty" zelda...

Two sticks should be the only way to play manic arena shooters (ala Robotron).
That Dark Mist game looks like it has annoying strafe controls as the player can't aim for shit. It might as well be boulder's gate as far as I'm concerned since its non-manic.

Are you talking about the Canonspike/ZG2 type position lock? What's wrong w/ that?

I'm not a huge fan of 360" strafeing shootings, although I so like ZG2. I do not like GunSpike for some reason. ZG2 has the opposite controls, where the plane is always in strafe mode and uses a rotate button where you rotate in place. A subtle difference, but much better implementation for aiming than free movement with strafe button, which is what Dark Mist looks like in the youtube videos.
