Meh. I have it. It seems the original Shienryu (on Sega Saturn) should be found immediately after completion, because Gekioh has no loop. Lots of crazy little extras though.

the laughter mode is fucking hilarious.. worth it just for that, shienryu is a pretty poor game otherwise, nice music and gfx in the 1st level and after that the developers just ran out of ideas it seems..
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..

I enjoyed it and would recommend picking it up cheaply. To score well you need to use the lightning weapon as much as possible. But, after stage 4 you'll find it hard not to switch to red cannon shot - it gets very intense!

Looks like a neat little retro shooter, especially with those extras.

And I believe that more games should feature a "Comical Mode" with laugh tracks replacing sound effects.

Shienryu is a rock solid Raiden-clone. Quite difficult though, especially the last boss, who needs to be one-lifed. Definitely get the Saturn version though, the PS1 port is pretty messed-up.

hmmmm. most people get to level 5-6 on their first credit ever with default settings. (not that the game is bad)

Daioh on the other hand....

and then take their whole life to actually beat the last 2 levels :D

I never tried the PS1 version, but I find Shienryu on the Saturn to be very very enjoyable. One of the finest "old-school-like-raiden" games ever made.

I love shienryu. Arcade version has a few graphic details gekioh lacks. I thought the graphics and music both get better and better right up till the last second. Starts as a raiden clone, turns into a truxton clone, but better than both if you think raiden plays slow and snipey and truxton plays simple and check-pointy. Compared to any raiden/truxton derived game, this one's the best.

I find it to be a thoroughly embellished, finely made, stylistic and highly detailed shmup. I can only make it the red robot if I try hard.

The PS1 ver is mostly cool for the bonuses. Saturn or arcade ver are the best.

You know, the PS2 version is pretty decent as well (and it includes the sequel).

As for the ports, here's how they stack up:

Best - Saturn
Basically identical to the arcade game

Second to best - PS2
Basically identical to the arcade game (has proper low res display in tate)
BUT doesn't save scores, and buttons not freely configurable, d'oh!
Includes Shienryu Explosion
Has crappy budget package design

This could've been better - PS
Slowdown and tearing, make it inferior to the original
Includes some goofy bonus modes that you laugh at once and then never look at again

Ohnoes - PS, US version
No tate mode!

Only if you don't play for score.

What score? :D

To be quite honest I only played it once... reached the last boss on my first go.

The game has a nifty risk/reward system you have to exploit to score well. Bloodflowers describes it in his review.

The 411 on Shienryu's prequel, Daioh arcade PCB...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

There is Daioh from Athena Co. Ltd., the prequel to Shienryu, that plays very similar to the latter. The American Sammy USA region PCB of Daioh has the kick-ass 6-button support that the original JPN version of the same name doesn't have -- it only has two-button layout with 8-way digital joystick support. One would have to make a special "kick harness" in order to gain access to buttons 4, 5, and 6 on a USA ver. Daioh PCB.
This particular tate'd USA version arcade shmup title PCB is the only one to have 6-button support from the "get-go" which makes it a special one indeed... ^_~

Via a 2-pin header on a certain jumper of a USA Daioh PCB, it's possible to switch from "default" 6-button mode to the original JPN mode setting of 2-button mode with different sprite graphics and overall stage placement of enemies...very nice bonus for American Daioh PCB owners.

Is there any home version of Daioh? Wasn't it on one of the Dezaemons or something?

For CIT,

Yeah, there is the Daioh Gale shmup title on the PSX import of Dezaemon Plus disc. Not much, but still playable nevertheless...

The SFC Dezaemon also has a sample shmup based on Daioh.

It's not bad... that review, on the other hand. I wonder if people actually listen to themselves before they post stuff up? You just want to punch him.
