If you made a Shmup, how would you make it different?
If you made a Shmup, how would you make it different?
If I made one, I would call it : "Lead Rain".
-It would have an deep storyline
-Chuck D. Would be the voice of the pilot (Yes, Chuck D. From Public Enemy.)
- It would have a variety of ships and weapons load out.
-It would have alot levels
-It would use the Orta Engine. (Panzer Dragoon Orta) (Or a modified engine)
It would have Radio Chatter
It would have alot voice acting.
It would have alot different level paths that affect the story.
On a side note: Has anyone played R-type Final for the PS2?

It would use the orta engine thats for sure end up as a rail shooter LOL
I'd probably combine a bunch of great shoot em up ideas ikaruga colour changing, multi tiered power ups, net lock laser from souky sword from radiant, order and chaos fields, vertical and horizontal sections fly by camera shots fish bosses, support drones, directional weaponry, long levels, short levels, you name I'd have it in there.
Be soo wacked out only I'd like it and thats what matters.

what about a gore shmup like splatterhouse.
it would be called "silver bullet" which would also be the name of the ship.
in between levels, 80's commandos buffs stained with blood and guts would fire uzis and rocket launchers (one oversize weapon per hand) at the just defeated boss in a style similar to contra 3, all while shouting cheesy one-liners. the bosses would of course be rip-offs of classic horror flicks.
everything in full 2D, big WARNING before bosses (with blood dripping from the letters like the cannibal corpse logo). i think a horiz would be better suited.
no score system or gimmicks, just kill everything and survive as long as possible and a manic gameplay. 5 or 6 stages at most, completion time about 20mn.

I'd make it look like Battlefleet Gothic.
Also, it would pretty much require two players per ship. The ship would have a powerful forward-focussed gun, and be bristling with turrets which would be focussed on a crosshair on screen and the combined might of which will start out more powerfull than the main gun, but powerups could change that situation (or, depending on which are grabbed, make the disparity even worse). Also, the shots themselves would be somewhat displaced, the turrets on the side furthest from the target would actually fire a little to the side of the crosshair, and the turrets on the closest side would fire dead-on.
Ships smaller than your own would be ripped to pieces if you run into them, ships the same size and larger would be knocked off course if you collide with them. Bosses would destroy your ship if you run into them. To make up for all this firepower being given to the two-player team, the enemy would attack in huge unrelenting waves, creating literally inavoidable combinations of aimed shots and bullet patterns if all of them are allowed to fire, on any difficulty level above 'Kindergarten'. To keep the gunner from falling asleep, the enemy would also fire a lot of homing missile-type attacks that follow the ship around for a few seconds or untill they are destroyed. Also, one of the powerups would be replacing the crosshair with an invincible outrider, others would allow for the dispatch and control of short-range fighters (while still moving like and being relatively the same size as a fast ship in a regular shmup, everything ELSE would be scaled so it looks like the ship is in fact a huge flying fortress).
The pilot would pretty much just get bigger and badder guns of varying varieties. The pilot would be in control of movement, the main gun, and a right-or-left 'buckshot' attack of short range weak-ass fire that would only be any good against really weak enemies and missiles and would get about a tenth of a screen out in either direction from the ship.
