I think those are two different games. Raiden Project is RI and RII, and Raiden DX is a sort of combo between the two, right?

DX is older than Project too.

Yes. That goes for every single PS and PS2 game; you have to use a boot disk or a modchip.

It's pretty reliable, of course that was mine. Depends on where you get it really. It's about... 30 bucks? Probably less.

If you want, you can aslo use boot discs. They work like cheat discs, except they do what a modchip does. They are also cheaper. The catch is you have to take care of them just like any other CD.

Just buy a Japanese ps2 from www.play-asia.com or a similar site.

Raiden DX is awesome, way better than Project. Buy it

Swap discs will only allow you to play ps2 games region free, not ps1 games.

Why not just buy the game (quite a good one), set up an emulator on your PC, and save yourself some cash and modding for now? Most PS1 emulators read discs just fine, and Raiden DX plays without any real problems on epsxe and pSX. Sure, it's cool to have hardware to play it on (I use swap discs on my PS1), but get the game first so you can play it now. Worry about the hardware after you have that.

If you've got an original PlayStation, you could try one of the swap tricks. All you need for those is patience.

Cheat devices like Gameshark can let you play games from other regions in a PS1, also.

On the PS2 side of things, if you do a search for "mod AND chip AND swap" you'll find several topics about the various methods.

Nah, DX came out AFTER Raiden project.

And DX is a remixed and expanded Raiden II with a scoring system. Think of it as "Raiden II Black Label".

Breaker Pro and Gameshark both work in a PS2 for PS1 games, but you need a swap trick.

I have been told that the Memor32 memory card with memento firmware let you play PS1 imports and backups.

I asked this very question at killercabs:

here is the answer:

and then get this

and you will be fine.
I don't see anything about PS1 games. I did read somewhere else that support for this was coming in the future. Is it done now?
yeah it works just fine for ps1 games as well. You just boot into the memento screen (hold r2 at boot) and select cd boot.

Didn't Raiden DX come out in 1993/1994?

The Raiden Project for the PS1 came out in 1995. Raiden DX was released for the Japanese PS1 in 1997. The original arcade games came out in 1990, 1993, and 1994 respectively.

That's what I meant. Though I admit, I though RP came out in 96.

You might be thinking of the "Playstation the Best" re-release in '96. The original "Project" came out in very early '95.

This bit about Raiden DX is worth at least a cursory glance:
