So what am I missing from Gunbird?
OK, given my limited budget, I had to settle for Mobile Light Force (stripped down Gunbird) for PS1. I love it. It's a really fun shooter.
I wanted to know what I'm missing? Are there more levels in Gunbird? More story?

Landshark wrote in another thread about some gameplay differences:
I don't know if MLF removed the characters' dialogue completely or just edited them...or either, for that matter.Landshark wrote:But I have MLF and compared to the arcade, it is a walk in the park. It's missing ememies, some enemies don't shoot. The 4th level boss is bugged so when the 2nd phase starts, it floats to the top of the screen and SITS THERE doing nothing waiting for you to kill it.
The only way to make it move is to shoot off both of it's wings at which point it resumes its AI.
The 'table' at the end of level 5 or 6 doesn't even shoot at you.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

wobble mode, btw, for the uninitiated, is the shitty design decision of the developer to include a horizontal mode that is the correct width, but not the correct height. to compensate for this lack of height, the screen scrolls automatically up and down, not only with your movement, but "to show the other stuff that is not on the screen, but should be on the screen", because there is actually more of the game that is "playing" without being rendered. this creates a disgusting wobble effect that makes you motion sick and yes, it sucks.Ozymandiaz1260 wrote:Tate almost always looks better. And "wobble mode" is unbearable.black flag nc wrote:So...if you can't play it sideways, it sucks? Umm.... not sure I see your logic, friend.indstr wrote:i think it's missing tate mode which IMO the game isn't worth playing not tate
they could at least give you the option to keep the aspect ratio right and put black bars at the side of the screen too. yes, that sucks too, but at least it's playable. you just have to get closer to the screen

Tate mode is definitely the way to go but it's still cool that you are enjoying the game. Glad to see more people getting into shooters.black flag nc wrote:I see what you guys are saying about the wooble. Half the time I'm shooting at enemies off-screen that shouldn't be off-screen. And TATE would fix that. I see what you're saying now. Oh well, I only paid like 5 bucks for it.

It's way better but way harder. Gunbird is good practice for GB2.professor ganson wrote:If you're enjoying MLF, I'd suggest you find yourself a copy of Gunbird 2 for the DC (both the game and the machine are cheap in the U.S.). Turn your tv on its side and enjoy. Gunbird 2 is quite a lot better, imo.

The 411 on the USA region Gunbird PCB version...
I came across a pretty reasonable deal for a USA Gunbird PCB with all original Psikyo produced "English" language arcade paperworks, manual + official USA marquee for a mere $35.00+ USD off of eBay several years back -- not a bad deal there. It would've have been a complete kit if there was an Psikyo factory cardboard box included, but alas, none was included with it... ^_~
Jaleco was the official American arcade distributor who was granted exclusive rights to distribute the Gunbird PCB back in May of 1995.
My USA region Gunbird PCB has some stickers placed on the EPROMs with 05/1995 date (leads me to think of how many different revisions of Gunbird PCBs actually exist).

Glad to hear you say that you agree with us!black flag nc wrote:I see what you guys are saying about the wooble. Half the time I'm shooting at enemies off-screen that shouldn't be off-screen. And TATE would fix that. I see what you're saying now. Oh well, I only paid like 5 bucks for it.
Yea, "Wobble Mode" blows!!!
Non Tate mode also blows.
I hope you now realize that they (we) were'nt talking about some sort of horizontal mode, as the game initially was created vertically with a fixed screen the steadily scrolls upwards.
But in any case, enjoy your new bargain shmup! If you ever feel the need to play it as it was intended, you know what you need to do.
Get the PCB, or the import only Sega Saturn version...wich is VERY GOOD!!!

You might ask "XS Games" as to why they removed Gunbird's numerous storylines.LGB wrote:If the game has a story, why go to the trouble of removing it?FIL wrote:Gunbird had some pretty awesome dialogue though.
And Gunbird 2's storylines are even more intricate and involving depending on what characters are chosen as well...
If you want to see how both storylines play out, just try out both Gunbird & Gunbird 2 roms on Mame emulation... ^_~

Of course I don't play them for the story, but the general concept of 'one ship versus the entire enemy army' has appealed to me and enchanted me since I was a kid. It might be about 0.5% of the reason I play shmups, but it's still part of the reason.indstr wrote:if there's anybody who plays shmups for the story, they are a complete idiot
Which make me 0.5% idiot!
In fact, I'm sure it's closer to 66% idiot.

Yes, I can tell. And I ask again. Stupid XS... they may publish the games here, but they screw them up completely so sometimes you may as well stick to the original or the Japanese versions.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:You might ask "XS Games" as to why they removed Gunbird's numerous storylines.LGB wrote:If the game has a story, why go to the trouble of removing it?FIL wrote:Gunbird had some pretty awesome dialogue though.
