The Street Fighter IV Thread
Well, they're just playing it safe right now. Everybody said they didn't care for SFIII's characters so what can Capcom do but keep the roster balanced with familiar goodness? If they showed all Crimson Vipers, people would be having their heads as well for having new characters who supposedly don't even have that "SF design."
Plus, you have to take into account the revealing order. Naturally, any competent advertiser will save the best for last. So we have all our familiar faces starting from the most familiar onwards to allow older players to relate to the game. Along with that, we currently have a splattering of 2 new characters and a ridiculously unbalanced player select screen to indicate that more will exist. In due time, it'll be your turn to get excited.

Only thing I like about the game so far is the way it shows your countries flag before a match. Sports-like presentation like this is what I love in fighting games.
The actual game itself looks ridiculously uninteresting. Street Fighter 2 but with incredibly standard looking 3d graphics.
Only way I can get excited now is if they reveal Final Fight characters as part of the roster.

I'll play it, looking forward to it also. BUT..... I loved SF2.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Hey, I personally loved SF3's characters, and everybody who said they didn't like them were just whining because they would have to learn new peopleGanelon wrote:Well, they're just playing it safe right now. I understand that they would obviously save the "best" for last, but I am concerned because certain characters, because of their design or style, are most likely going to preclude other characters(specifically other returning Cpacom characters). For instance, I would love to see Alex from 3, but since Abel looks like the a hybrid throw character, it wouldn't make too much sense to have another character like that. The same goes stylistically for the Dudley/Balrog debacle. Typically fighters take one representative from a specific style, and they seem to have already picked their boxer (Unless they dcide to go all Alpha 3 on us and throw in as many characters as they can fit, which is also a bad idea).Ganelon wrote:Plus, you have to take into account the revealing order. Like I said before Ono hinted that after the "Original 8" reveal essentially we had at least 6 more characters to look forward to. At that point I guessed: Sagat (confirmed), Balrog (confirmed), Vega, Bison, and 2 new characters. I hope I'm wrong about the number of new characters though
If it goes that route then this game wouldn't be nothing more then Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo 3D but take out Fei-Long, Cammy, Deejay, and T.Hawk and throw in 4 other new faces instead.
Kind of redundant in my opinion.
Sure this game may be called Street Fighter IV, but IT needs to start showcasing some actual elements that give it the essential "IV" to the title, things that bring the series to an entirely new level other then some 3D visual polish and and a new gauge / counter system.
Just as Street Fighter 1 to Street Fighter 2 had an entirely revised cast and make innovations to the series, the same goes when Street Fighter 2 jumped to Street Fighter 3 with the same changes (Different cast and new gameplay innovations)
A company should not need to take a step back in order to take a step forward.
Sure it's nice having Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Guile, and all of the other original 8 from Street Fighter 2, but considering this game's story takes place in between the events of Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter III, that implies it should also bring a mix to the table of characters that would likely show up DURING that time frame.
I'm not like other people that write off the game BEFORE playing it. Only those that have actual hands on experience that actually KNOW the game from playing it, only have the right to state their views, Anything else is merely speculation and hearsay and not on the basis of facts.

Then add them back in the Turbo Hyper Fighting Alpha Super CE World edition.OmegaDL50 wrote:If it goes that route then this game wouldn't be nothing more then Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo 3D but take out Fei-Long, Cammy, Deejay, and T.Hawk and throw in 4 other new faces instead.
40 more bux please.
You know its gunna happen.
And don't get me wrong in general. I would love for this to be the game I've been waiting for for years, but man its just been such a downhill slide. SNKVSCAP 2 was just like the last straw. They need a huge winner or they are done.
It's usually people who've never played/suck at fighting games that make this joke. You're right, we would've been better off if they stopped at World Warrior/Model T.Then add them back in the Turbo Hyper Fighting Alpha Super CE World edition.

+1 for Street fighter 3 characters. Whats not to like about Sean, Dudley, Oro and Ibuki? Elena is really well animated and Necro is fun. still holding out for hugo, Zangief vs Hugo would rock so much.

The thing is though that Capcom wanted to make things simpler and somewhat slower rather than more broken (much like Brawl's game mechanics ideology).OmegaDL50 wrote: Sure this game may be called Street Fighter IV, but IT needs to start showcasing some actual elements that give it the essential "IV" to the title, things that bring the series to an entirely new level other then some 3D visual polish and and a new gauge / counter system.
The inherent problem here is that some people are expecting more of everything. Why does that have to be the case? Capcom just wants a successful product that a larger group of people will enjoy and buy. You're already getting very stylish graphics and what appears to be solid game mechanics. Why the demand for features that will complicate the game and undoubtedly introduce more game-breaking glitches?
To maximize its audience, it needs to go with recognizable faces, not the SFIII cast that any casual player wouldn't realize. It's easy to add new characters in sequels; it's not easy to grab someone's attention from a series that's been in a longtime mainstream limbo. It needs easy-to-understand game mechanics that while still true to SF basics, is simple enough to get into and is part of what has made Smash so ridiculously successful these past couple generations.
If you consider less complexity a step back, then so be it. On the other hand, I can't wait for a fighter of easy accessibility. It's why I play ST to this day. On the other hand, just by looking at the pace and zoomed in camera, it's easy to see that this game will resemble nothing like ST's projectile-heavy zoning. This is Capcom's effort to break away from the suicidal goal of making fighters so complicated, only a very small audience will be willing to play it (which is what killed the flight sim and wargame genres).
This is the revival of 2D gaming. If this succeeds, a new era of SF will be upon us. Fail, and SF will live on in quiet obscurity. Feel disappointed all you like about the mechanics or characters; they're not the way to attract a casual audience and I'm pretty sure you all realize that as well. I like where this is going and hope SFIV can lead us into a new direction in fighting away from double-digit combos and complex defensive maneuvers.
you suck! but yeah Q is awesome.P_HAT wrote:Sean, Dudley, Oro and Ibuki suck.Lordstar wrote:+1 for Street fighter 3 characters. Whats not to like about Sean, Dudley, Oro and Ibuki? Elena is really well animated and Necro is fun. still holding out for hugo, Zangief vs Hugo would rock so much.

Man, you suck!

Dudley is not a clone of Balrog. Have you actually played him?

Hes got some hops in the new trailer/vids for sure. I'm all about evening up the field and making people more viable in general but giving him some air game would be a bit questionable. Who knows.. I'll have to play it.. we are just watching movie pictures.Randorama wrote: (well, Honda would not have been a good Yokozuna, perhaps).

Wooo! Just got a press invite to play the Street Fighter IV arcade build at Capcoms UK HQ next Wednesday. Apparently it's the GDC build. Did anybody get to GDC this year to play it?
Is it a full build? Was it in a full cab?
I can't wait! They'll probably make me sign a load of NDA's to prevent me writing any articles for a little bit, but any questions I need to ask or things in the game I need to check out? Obviously I've got my own, but suggestions are appreciated!
I know some people are suspicious of SFIV, but I'm bloody excited to actually play it...

Well, I just got back from Capcom's London HQ playing SFIV arcade build all morning. I'm no expert as I'm always bullet dodging, but to me it plays like a super slick SF2. The new characters were awesome to play with too.
Some great backgrounds too. I particularly enjoyed the starving dogs wandering behind Chun-Li's level...
Apparently there's loads of re-balancing to be done with things like character reach and the like, but overall it is just far simpler than recent SFIIIs. The revenge moves are awesome. I wish I could say more but embargoes stop me, and I know there's some Capcom staff here lurky lurkers...

Yeah, I will miss Dudley, Alex and Ibuki. Also really enjoyed Makoto (though was crap with her) and Oro (who was an interesting take on the whole charge-character conventions thing.

And for anyone who cares, what looks to be a new boss
http://kotaku.com/5011305/new-street-fi ... characters
I am hoping this game ends up being somehow better than it looks and plays, I'm still disappointed that there's no Dudley, Alex or parrying..

So Fei Long and Dan are going to be in SF4 as well? This is turning into Alpha 3 isn't it?
