Create your own insane shmup ("Blast Works" for Wi
Video HERE
sorry but this looks like really insanely(sp?) awesomeness deluxe.
I never wow'ed so many times before while watching a simple trailer.
This IS now my most anticipated Wii game(next to House of the Dead 2+3).
There seems to be so much stuff to do(create). I love the art style and possibilities. a huge plus is also that you can share your self-created-shmup with your friends via WiiConnect(online).
gimme....NOW
release: 1st of May 2008 in U.S. and hopefully in Europe soon afterwards

Unless I missed something, I don't think you can. The part where there's the Tempest looking shoot'em-up is actually just showing the four ABA games that you can unlock in Blast Works (Torus Trooper being the title in question).zubiac wrote:I love the fact that you can also create 3d'ish(like tempest 2000) shooters.

"Create a shmup"?
You peolpe ever played one of Kenta Cho's games?
You CAN'T create any shmups here - all you can do is customize your ship and (maybe) the levels to a certain extent. Big deal
Btw, there'a an embarrassing lack of bullets in this gameplay vid. I really hope it comes with an expert level option or something...

It's certainly a good way to make sure no-one outside of these forums is going to take a commercial shmup serious anymore. "Everyone can make a shmup".
It looks fun though. Expect many a Tohou inspired game, meaning endless streams of bullets and no enemy patterns whatsoever.

oh c'mon.....it isn't like a shmup without a trillions of bullets onscreen is automaticly a failure.Necronom wrote:Btw, there'a an embarrassing lack of bullets in this gameplay vid. I really hope it comes with an expert level option or something...
I don't get that goddamn bullet-hell-trend anyway.
There are dozens of non-bullet-hell shmups out there which are fantastic and HARD.

Did I miss something? I thought Blast Works was a port/expansion on Tumiki Fighters.

Not in the strictest sense, no, but certainly in the most pointed one. I actually went back and played some Mountain of Faith to verify my claim. I guess I should have written "no endless stream of interesting enemy patterns." It's just a personal preference.moozooh wrote:Doesn't look like a description of a Touhou game, to be honest.
The way I see it is that sometime during the nineties developers had a chance to greatly improve upon the number and the dynamics of enemy patterns but somehow chose to focus on bullet patterns instead. It seems to have attracted many new people to shmups though, so I'm not complaining (that much).
It is powerup of laser.

You do realize that Tumiki Fighters, the game Blast Works is based on, is a bullet hell shooter. The whole "using ship parts as shild or retracting them and missing points" system is pretty much tied into the bullet hell concept. You haven't played any of Cho's games yet, right?zubiac wrote:oh c'mon.....it isn't like a shmup without a trillions of bullets onscreen is automaticly a failure.Necronom wrote:Btw, there'a an embarrassing lack of bullets in this gameplay vid. I heartily second the opinion of the above GAF veteran. I was already looking forward to this before I knew about the included Kenta Cho goodness. Plus, it'll be interesting to see what folks come up with in our inevitable Wii Connect trading thread.PepsimanVsJoe wrote:So I get a cool looking shmup-creator and console ports of Tumiki Fighters, Rrootage, Torus Trooper and Gun Roar for 39.99?
Yeah I'm very much sold.

Looked at the video.
Dangit I need this game.....
There's just one problem with this though:
It's on a Nintendo system.
I bet you anything that Nintendo, in the interest of "protecting the kiddies" (SIGH), will stamp their usual hilariously-stupid and royally annoying online limitations on here.
You know, like the evil that is "friend codes".
Advance Wars is a good example.
Dont get me wrong, I love the game....
But when it comes to online play, there are a couple of screwball restrictions. You can only use the voice chat with friends (thus making for NO communication during random matches), and the one that annoys me the most, the map trading, when NOT done with friends, will only let you trade REALLY TINY maps. Knowing Nintendo (I often wish I dont), the reason for this is likely something along the lines of "Well, if you can only do really dinky maps, there isnt enough room on them to make swear words out of cities".
I certainly want Blast Works, oh yes, but.....
Being that it's Nintendo, and that Nintendo is dumber than a sack full of hammers, Im not gonna get my hopes up TOO much that it wont have some annoying-as-heck problem.
Sorry, mini-rant done with. I just find their policy on this crap to be both monumentally irritating and massively retarded.

Isn't online only used to share map/enemy designs? You do know that certain titles on Wii have their own online service (EA's being example) that don't use Nintendo WFC?
And even then, it's not as if friends-codes is going to prohibit you from enjoying the rest of the game.
Besides, this is being published by Majesco. Stop blaming Nintendo for everything. And it's not as if other console companies are exempt from stupidity.

edit: I also want to add, I think it's awesome how Treasure has trumped Nintendo by making Bangaioh Spirit's map file trading via sound files. Could this start an online viral Treasure fan group who trade maps using youtube clips?
Agreed, I can still see her point though in how annoying Nintendo's restrictions are. I don't care about their stance on voice chat, since I hate vc with strangers anyways. It's just a bunch of yapping, flaming and swearing. But things like basically punishing AW players who choose not to use FC or not being able to see non-friend opponents' names or stats in Brawl is rediculous. I also don't understand why they've made it so custom maps downloaded from the Brawl site will delete after a few days.
In a recent IGN interview, Sakurai literally said he chose not to make a leaderboard for Brawl because he was concerned that less experienced players would feel bad when they saw how much better everyone else was doing! lol
But whatever, like I said, there will surely be a dedicated BW thread here brimming with easily accessible friend/system codes and maps. I'd rather trade a map with a real fan anyways, so it's all good.

I think that had more to do with Wii memory space.Dylan1CC wrote: I also don't understand why they've made it so custom maps downloaded from the Brawl site will delete after a few days.
And I understand his logic behind no leaderboards, as you can only get so stathigh in Smash Bros...(i.e. people who would still be playing 7 years from now)
Although I will admit about the stupid stuff, such as non-friendcode names and and the other stuff that they would potentially censor via wordfilters anyway...
Still, this is a Majesco title we're talking about and so far I haven't heard any restrictions on their behalf.

Oh Im aware of all that stuff.
And both Microsoft and Sony certainly indeed have their own forms of dippy idiocy.
It's just that, being into online games as I am, I get *really* damn sick of Nintendo's stance on.... basically everything related to it. Absolutely hate friend codes.
And Nintendo is still the worst of the 3 as far as 3rd party relations go... I would not be surprised at all if they FORCE restrictions like that on Majesco's title. Stupid? Yes. But that's how they work, unfortunately. They're already doing this with the Miis. Lotsa developers would love to use the Miis in titles of their own. There are numerous games out already that woulda been perfect for that, but Nintendo.... not the developer or publisher associated with the game.... no, NINTENDO themselves told them "No, you absolutely cannot do this with that game". Reasons? Nobody has a clue. If there's a good reason, I'd sure like to know what it is.
They make great games. They make indestructible hardware. The 64 can take a bounce down a flight of stairs with no damage at all. Throw the Wiimote at a wall, the wall will break before it does.
But their business side / decision-making / whatever-you-call-it is unfortunately dumber than a stump. Has been for awhile.
Dont get me wrong. Im not like, boycotting the Wii or something. I complain *alot* about things done by Sony, but I still have a PS3 and enjoy it daily. And I intend on picking up the Wii this weekend, mainly due to Brawl's imminence and Geometry Wars luring me with it's shmuppy awesomeness.
It's just that games like Advance Wars and such *could* be better experiences, WITHOUT the dumbbell decisions of certain dipwad execs. Let the designers have their way for once, Nintendo, is all I ask.
Blast Works looks absolutely awesome, and I know the editor will consume great amounts of my time. The whole package looks great.
But just once I'd like to see an online experience from them that isnt stupid. Particularly for a game that's this awesome.
The PS3 can do it. The 360 can do it. Why cant this?
Sorry for mini-rant, but that's my stance on the whole thing. Right now, aside from maybe some map trading in games like this, and Brawl, I've no intention of even touching a more online-oriented game if it's on the Wii (like an FPS), just due to the stupid I've already seen from them.
Fortunately though that's not why Im buying the system. But I have my opinions anyway.

*sigh* Do we have to go through this again? Nintendo places NO such restrictions on third parties. If you're wondering why "early" games like My Sims and such (which have been in development since the conception of Nintendo's "Revolution) do not support Miis, it's because they haven't heard of Miis and their functionality untill it was late in development. And SNK's Metal Slug Anthology "no Classic controller" screw up was their screw up (who basically misheard the whole No Classic Contoller deal), not Nintendo's.-Bridget- wrote:And Nintendo is still the worst of the 3 as far as 3rd party relations go... (In fact, I keep hearing from alot of people nowdays that it is because of Nintendo is not placing these restrictions that the Wii has so much shovelware. But the fact remains that the Nintendo nowdays is a far cray from the Nintendo of the 64-bit days...)
If they have a better online system for ranking, fine. EA has done it. I believe Ubisoft has, too. They could always apply their own online infostructure if they wanted to, or if they felt Nintendo's was inadiquate. Nobody is preventing Majesco from doing anything with this title.

Who told you that the online sharing will work with FCs only?
The best example would be eledees(elebits) for Wii cause you can share self-created stages online but without any FCs. It simply uses your Wii adresse-book. and I'm darn sure that Blast Works will use it elsewell.
I agree that FCs suck(especialy that you need a seperate for each game) but there are already several great non-nintendo games (which can be played online) without Nintendo FCs.
i.e. Medal of Honor Heroes 2 from EA which is a blast online.
It uses EAs very own servers.
