I am horrendously confused about R-TYPE on the pc-engine...
Um, are R-TYPE I & II the same game only different parts/levels, or what? Why is R-TYPE II so hard on the pc-engine, and completely different on the arcade version? Is the R-TYPE II for pc-engine just later levels of what is actually R-TYPE I? I'm trying to remember what I played in the arcade and what I'm playing on the pc-engine (which I just recently bought), but it just seems off...

By the way, I played R-Type Complete (PCE CD) a while ago and found it to be unplayable due to sprite flickering. For instance the boss of level 4 shoots invisible lasers most of the time. Very bad.
Just get R-Types for Playstation.

And thanks guys for the suggestions on good R-TYPE ports, but if I want arcade perfect, I'll either get the PCB or play it in MAME... I'm just interested in playing pc-engine games right now, since I just got one. Do you guys have any suggestions for good pc-engine shmups besides what's in the faq, which are

The Amiga R-Type is available for free from www.factor5.com , along with the Amiga Kakatis, and the Amiga port of Bonk's Adventure (BC Kid). Not arcade perfect, but the price is right.

Override : fast (not manic but close) adrenaline inducing shmup. The second loop is really great !
Armed F : old school style vert. Not loved by many people but fun. An acquired taste.
Super Darius : the only console port. Again pretty oldschool and hard.
Super Darius 2 : different from the original arcade one and other ports. The music is totally revamped in a more classic shooting style.
Download 1 and 2 : pretty weird but interesting cyberpunk shmup.
Kiandan 00 : fun oldschool horiz in the style of Geppy X (I prefer Kiandan to G X)
W-Ring - The Double Rings : Gradius clone with a standard item system and a wonderful chiptune soundtrack. Each stage got a secret alternative one.
Metal Stoker : borderliner free roaming cyberpunk futuristic tank shmup.
Armed F : old school style vert. Not loved by many people but fun. An acquired taste.
Super Darius : the only console port. Again pretty oldschool and hard.

but I think the PCE Version of R-TYPE 1 (part 1+2) is faster than the Arcade Original. The resolution of the game is lower that in the arcade so there is less space to move and the enmies are faster. Anybody thinks the same or am I wrong?!
I mean it's the same about Truxton Aracde Vs. Truxton PC Engine. The PCE Version is much faster and harder

I forget exactly which level it is, but there is an extra boss in one of the levels in the SUper CD-Rom PC-Engine version. Its NOT in PS1 R-Types.
I think it may be stage 4 or 5, and it features green/bluish pipe type structures, with what I precieve to be green "engine blocks" on what could be conveyor belts.
Normally, you simply dodge and shoot the "engine blocks" and thats it...whereas in the PC-Engine version, you have to fight an "eyeball in the wall" type thing right after this.
Perhaps someone else can elaborate further as I'm too tired to research this, and its been quite some time since I last played the game, regardless of port/version.

Atari ST, too. That article missed a few home computer ports, and mistakenly said R-Type DX had a new stage. Still a nice piece, though; it was part of what fired up my interest in shooters again a few years back.
Anyway, Super R-Type is an arranged version of R-Type II. Some of the stages are taken from the arcade game and altered to varying degrees, some are entirely new.
Super R-Type stages:
Stage 1 = New
Stage 2 = Arcade stage 1
Stage 3 = Arcade stage 2 (new mini-boss and boss)
Stage 4 = New (and awesome)
Stage 5 = Arcade stage 4
Stage 6 = New
Stage 7 = Arcade stage 6
Also, all the music is replaced and two of the laser power-ups are changed. But the big downside, like Ceph said, is that dying always throws you back to the beginning of the stage.
It's probably a strange way to play, but sometimes I like to do the first four stages of R-Type II, then switch to Super R-Type and use the stage select code to hit the new stages and the final stage (its SNES music kicks the arcade's ass).

You know, in the game's defense, this is only a problem on stage 7. In every other level, getting sent back to the beginning of the stage is the best place to start since it gives you ample opportunity to power-up. The ps2 R-Types port runs too fast because it syncs to the 60 hz, and the arcade ran at 55hz or so.
This makes the final battle a LOT harder in r-type1.
The tg-16 conversion is very reasonable, but not perfect.
I don't have to worry about the lazers from the level 4 boss ever, so that's a non-issue (someone showed me the top secret easy kill trick back on the arcade, and it works in pce as well, though not as well)
The new boss on level 6 PCE throws me for a loop, though.
