Can't decide what buttons to order

Post by Elaphe »

I have the discarded standard pushbuttons by Sanwa or Seimitsu because of their poor reliability. However, I have found to a company in Britain that can send me Seimitsus PS-14 GXN or Sanwas OBSN-30RG. I'd like them black, but Sanwas are not available in this color, so they would be red. The other option for me is to buy concave western type buttons with Cherry microswitches here in my country, which would be much faster and cheaper. What do you recommend me to do? My panel will be black, with a Suzo 500 installed, and I'll use it mainly for shmpus. Are japanese buttons worth the effort and the wait and a big improvement over western buttons? Which of these models is better in your opinion?

I have an egret II with sanwas and a neo-geo 4 slot with convex happ buttons (the newer style), and while I think the happs are fine for games like drift out, I really couldn't image it being very good for shmups. When you tap them repeatedly the spring vibrates oddly in the shaft of the button and it just feels weird :? I also really hate concave buttons, but mostly it's all just in what you personally like... it's not like you can't get used to whatever you choose or that it will really make you suck that much more at whatever game you're playing. Just take into consideration the difference in length on japanese and american style buttons, to make sure they'll fit in your stick.

I like the concave buttons. The one's with the perpendicular switch mounting do take up a lot of room.

That's what I used to think too. I ordered the convex buttons by accident, and then got all pissed off when I realized what I had done. But, after I had played with them awhile, I went to the local ice rink and played their SFII cab with concave buttons, and I could hardly stand it. It just felt gross to my fingers :?

As an owner of a black panel, don't use black buttons. Red sticks/buttons look much nicer. As for button type, use whatever you're comfortable with. "Improvement", in this case is entirely up to your preference.
