My older, 1997 20" Magnovox TV needs to be replaced. This replacement TV will be for my gaming & personal use & remain in my office.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a 20" ( or so ) TV @ $200 or under that would be a good gaming/TATE candidate as well as just a good TV?
Does anyone have a suggestion for a TV to "NOT" get? Does any brand just HATE being TATED?
..
Got TV!?
$200? Hmm… I don't think you'll get anything remotely "good" for this kind of money, unless it's used, or a really sucky CRT. That being said, I think I'd rather shell out about $350-400 as much and get myself a somewhat decent LCD with progressive scan, component input, and acceptable view angles and pixel response time. That's still better than poking my eyes out sitting in front of a small and fragile CRT TV, imo.

Im fairly determined to keep the cost as close to $200 as possible.
I may watch an hour of TV each week & I have a 27" TV for that in another room.
I just need something that will deliver the best picture & performance within the budget Ive set.
Youre right, if I spend 2-3 X my set budget Id get a better TV monitor. But it would not be money well spent. Like buying a BMW to go to the grocery store down the street.
Ive been looking at some 20" flat screen, digital SDTV. I may even think about an LCD thats been refurbished for a bit more.
Right now Im just looking for any suggestions of what to consider or to stay away from within a $200 to $300 budget.

You need something like this
http://www.gadmei.com/new3/ProductShow. ... icleID=173
although the 6818 model looks newer better.
I have one (the one in the link , not the 6818) which is why I say "something like" because the picture from the Gadmei is not too good. The things I considered are:
- My monitor is a widescreen monitor with a native resolution of 1680*1050 (i.e. 16:10). Most games systems from yesteryear are 4:3. Most XGA boxes will NOT preserve the original 4:3 aspect ratio, so the monitor ends up stretching the 4:3 picture into widescreen making all the circles on screen go flat. The Gadmeii DOES preserve the aspect ratio which is why I chose it.
However the SVGA and Composite conversions are not too good, it adds motion blur to the picture for some reason. But for a box as cheap as it is I was quite happy with it as an interim until I can afford something better.
I connect my N64, Xbox, Dreamcast. Panasonic q, etc. using svideo. Actually I have an svideo switch box that I connect all my consoles to and then send the output from that into the Gadmei
It also has a straight through VGA socket so I connect my Xbox 360 via a vga cable. It doesn't quite give true HD but I think it looks great. The Gadmei has composite cables on it, but again I prefer the VGA. the Gadei is not that good at converting the picture.
So, in short, you need something like the Gadmei that will preserve aspect ratio (if you need that) but hopefully has a better picture output than the Gadmei.
Cheers

Oddly enuf, the 20" TV I thought was scrap since I moved it into the kitchen & it wouldnt work with the satellite there is now working flawlessly back in my office again & connected to the satellite there. Very weird.
I moved it in the 1st place because it didnt have AV hookups like the 13" that was in the kitchen so I swapped 'em. But I now have an extra Sony VCR connected to the TV & use its AV hookup to connect to the DC/Saturn consoles.
It TATEs beautifully & it all works great. WTF!?
