Is there a shmup with this feature?

Post by TKGB_Mental_Gear »

I was just thinking about U.N. Squadron and remembered that it had hidden items you have to shoot at to reveal. I don't know if it's on every level but they are hidden in places you gotta shoot to reveal.

I was wondering if any shmups have this feature as a main attraction or as a side one.

The Donpachi series, obviously. And Radiant Silvergun has these hidden dogs.

Varth uses this extensively. Section Z had the hidden body part collecting. Gate of Thunder and Lost Worlds had power-ups hidden this way.

There are quite a few games like that... the fairy from Raiden comes to mind...

I don't think there are many shmups that have it as a main feature though...

EDIT: There are quite a few games where you have to bomb the secret place too, like the the flamingos in Garegga.

I guess I didn't make myself clear.

I meant that is there a game where this is the main point of the game. Where you HAVE to search for these items to get something in return. Not just powerups and score items that are hidden but things neccessary to unlock something or view a special ending or something.

Only the NES and FDS versions require you to find a wanted poster to face the boss. No searching or buying items in shops is required in the arcade version.

Not the same as searching, but 1943 requires you to destroy a certain percentage of enemies before reaching the next level. A few of the twinbee games have hidden items from bombing, but finding and collecting isn't the main point of the game.

Super Xevious: GAMP no Nazo maybe?
hardcore gaming 101 wrote:"GAMP no Nazo" is quite original because, true to its name, you must solve riddles in each stage in order to progress. Unless you meet certain criteria (could be bombing all required targets, or finding a hidden spot in the clouds) the stage loops indefinitely, getting harder and harder in the process.

W Ring on the pce. Each stage as one secret item to shoot at, to go on an alternate stage.

19xx has this feature as well.
I think you can even reveal a Ryu icon (complete with an animated Shoryuken) on the third level.
