So how bout some help from the experts?

Post by black flag nc »

OK, my shmup collection is lacking. I live in the US. I have a PS1, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, SNES, Genesis, and GBA. I need recommendations!

One more thing. NO IMPORTS. It does me no good if it's in Japan and cost $84. I know that makes me a lightweight, but I'm working with a limited budget.

Please help me all mighty shmup experts! Thank you and keep blastin! :D

for starters what do you already have? r-type final is a really good title that'll set you back 9-15 bucks depending on where you get it. also einhander and thunderforce v are always a good selection, any of the gradius games are a must have also. super aleste for snes is alot of fun. dreamcast is loaded with some good stuff. giga wing 1 and 2, mars matrix, bangai-o. on genesis go with biohazard battle or lightening force.

If you like R-Type games, definitely get R-Type Delta. R-Types, a compilation of the first two arcade games, is really good too. They're both for PS1.

R-Types is NTSC-J isn't it?

I don't have any other titles to offer. Except perhaps Raiden Project PS1.

there is definitely an NTSC-U version of R-Types (I own a copy.) You might be thinking of the PSX Gradius games.

Gunbird 2= Mobile Light Force(PSX)? Got that one coming off of ebay.

Also have Mobile Light Force 2 (Castle Shikigami 1?) for PS2 and Sol Divide for PS1 on the way.

Oh, OK. Well I guess I have Gunbird 1 on the way. I hear it was stripped down, but that's just as well cause I can't understand Japanese.

It has some gameplay differences as well, as reported by landshark. Gunbird and Mobile Light Force -scores aren't compatible.

PS Gunbird port/MLF is the worst port of any shooter released in the last 15+ years (when was SNES Raiden Trad released?). GB2 is much better anyways.

Well, I guess I'll see what I end up with. If it sucks ass, I only spent like 5 bucks on it.

Is Mobile Light Force 2 actually Castle Shikigami 1?

I'd like to suggest something here, but honestly, I cant really think of anything.

If you're not willing to import, you're basically limited mostly to older shmups, and some of the very very few we've gotten here in the US recently.

Im not too fond of importing either..... my copy of Dai-ou-jou cost me $100..... but for a total fanboy like me, it was more than worth it.

I'll complain about how expensive they are, sure, lol, but that dont stop me from buying them again and again :)

I think like 70% of my collection of PS2 titles is all imports now......

MORE than worth it to play games like Mushihime-sama and ESPGaluda.

Most people don't like it, but I really enjoy RayCrisis. At very least though, you can find it for very cheap, alongside Thunderforce V, so if you're in the spending mood...

Thanks for your help guys! I've added the follwing to my collection:

Got off of ebay:

Sol Divide PS1
Mobile Light Force 2 PS2
Mobile Light Force PS1
Phalanx GBA
Shooter: Space Shot PS1

Lost my ebay bids on:

Gradius V PS2
Raiden III PS2

Next paycheck I'm definitely getting:

Gradius III and IV PS2
Thunder Force V PS1

I'm getting a respectable collection, considering I can't import right now. Thanks again! You guys are great. :D

Giga Wing first, Mars Matrix later! GW2 got me hooked on Takumi scoring systems, so that one.

My crappy collection grows!

This week, I got Raiden III (PS2) and Strikers 1945 (PS1). Both are a lot of fun.

Seriously bro, you have to look into the Dreamcast situation. Much better American released ports. You have to get Gunbird 2.

Why did you pay so much? It's been continually and readily available brand new for $60-$70 since its release. You can go to Play-asia.com and buy one right now for $65 ($60 if you have a coupon).
